Best Sleeper Sofas: Mattress Types and Sizes Compared

Which sleeper sofa to buy: pull-out, click-clack or daybed, the mattress each uses, the bed size, how deep it opens and the room it needs, with five picks.

An opened sofa bed made up with white bedding and two pillows in a bright studio, with wooden shelves, a desk and two framed prints

Your guest lies down on a bar through a thin mattress, or the bed unfolds straight into the coffee table. Buying by the word “queen” on the listing is where it goes wrong: the two queen sleepers below have mattresses of 58 by 77.5 and 60 by 71.5 inches, both short of the approximate 60 by 80 inches one retailer’s guide gives for an open queen, and the Leah needs 90.5 inches of floor from the wall before anyone walks around it. So here are the six things to check on any sleeper listing, then five sleepers measured against them, from a $569 twin daybed with a trundle to a $4,499 queen pull-out, each with who it suits and its drawback.

The short answer

Pick Best for Bed when open Price (reference)
Plank+Beam Morgan Daybed with Trundle A teen’s room or occasional guests, two single beds (our reading) Twin deck plus a twin trundle that takes a mattress up to 5 in thick $569
Coddle Fold Convertible Couch A small apartment and one guest 78 x 49.6 in small double on the seat foam; at least 49.6 in deep open (the bed’s width; our reading) $748
Coddle Nova Full-Sized Sleeper Sofa An everyday living-room sofa that sleeps one adult 75 x 54 in full, 4 in memory foam over coils $1,999
La-Z-Boy Leah Queen Sleep Sofa Two adults who fit a 71.5 in bed, for less than the Neva 60 x 71.5 in queen, 5.5 in innerspring; 90.5 in fully extended $2,759
Sixpenny Neva Sleeper Sofa, queen Two adults, with 102 to 108 in of floor from the wall (our arithmetic) 58 x 77.5 in mattress, 3.5 in foam; 84 in deep open $4,499

What should you check on a sleeper sofa listing?

Six things decide whether a sleeper suits you. The first two decide how it sleeps; the other four decide whether it fits your room and your front door.

1. The mechanism

These are four of the types on one retailer’s sleeper sofa guide:

  • Pull-out. A hidden frame and mattress are stored in the base; on a traditional pull-out you take the seat cushions off and pull the bed out. Pull-outs typically come closest to the feel of a traditional bed, in sizes from twin to king.
  • Click-clack (klik klak) or futon. Neither has a separate mattress; on a click-clack the backrest folds down to make a flat sleep surface. Both are typically smaller and lighter than a sleeper sofa, though guests staying several nights may appreciate the extra comfort of a sleeper sofa.
  • Daybed. Most are designed to tuck against a wall or under a window, and many include under-seat storage or a trundle bed.
  • Sectional or chaise sleeper. Either a pull-out mattress or a chaise that extends into a bed; some have a storage chaise for sheets and pillows.

2. The mattress: type and thickness

Three mattress types appear on the same retailer’s guide. Memory foam conforms to the body and minimizes motion transfer, and higher-density foam is suggested for support and longevity. Innerspring uses coils for bounce and airflow, and is called great for sleepers who run warm. Hybrid combines coils and foam, and is called a good choice for a guest bed. For pull-outs, a mattress 4 to 5 inches thick is typical on that guide. Click-clacks and futons have no separate mattress: their cushions are typically high-density or layered foam and may take more wear because they serve as both seat and bed, and that guide suggests watching foam density and construction, not just thickness.

What the five picks list:

  • Coddle Nova: a full mattress topped with 4 inches of memory foam; its bed surface is listed as sinuous springs and pocket coil mattress technology.
  • La-Z-Boy Leah: a queen quilted innerspring mattress 5.5 inches thick, included as the standard mattress.
  • Sixpenny Neva: a quilted mattress 3.5 inches thick, in high-density, high-resiliency foam with a cotton cover.
  • Coddle Fold: the cushions are listed as high-density foam and the mattress line in its spec table is blank, so you sleep on the seat foam (our reading).
  • Plank+Beam Morgan: the description doesn’t say whether mattresses are included (its photos show them made up); the trundle takes a twin mattress up to 5 inches thick, so check before you order (our suggestion).

3. The bed size, and the sofa’s length when closed

One retailer’s size chart gives approximate open mattress sizes of 38 x 75 inches for a twin, 54 x 75 for a full, 60 x 80 for a queen and 76 x 80 for a king. On the same retailer’s sleeper guide, a twin is narrow for larger adults; a full suits one adult comfortably but is cozy for two and may not be ideal for stays of more than a night; a queen suits two adults but requires more front clearance.

Real beds are not always those sizes. The Neva queen’s mattress is 58 x 77.5 inches; the Leah’s queen is 60 x 71.5, as wide as that chart’s queen but 8.5 inches shorter (our arithmetic). The Fold is a small double, 49.6 inches wide; Coddle’s own FAQ puts a small double at about 48 to 49 inches wide against 54 for a US full, sleeping one adult or two people who don’t mind getting cozy.

On a pull-out, the bed’s width sits inside the sofa’s length (our reading). The Nova is 87 inches long and holds a 54-inch-wide bed; the Leah is 82 inches long and holds a 60-inch mattress; the Neva is 84 inches long and holds a 58-inch mattress. On the click-clack Fold, the bed runs the full 78-inch length of the sofa (our reading).

4. How far it opens, and the clearance in front

On the same sleeper guide, most pull-out sleepers extend at least 60 inches forward when fully open, and it suggests generally leaving 18 to 24 inches of walking space around the open bed. If the open bed blocks a main walkway or door path, the same retailer’s size guide asks for 30 to 36 inches for main walkways, and one sofa maker’s guides say at least 30. One sofa maker’s measuring guide adds two steps: check how much room a sleeper needs fully extended, and mark the footprint on the floor with painter’s tape and live with it for a day.

How far each pick opens:

  • Neva: the listing prints the open size, 84 inches wide by 84 inches deep.
  • Leah: the listing prints 90.5 inches fully extended, from the back of the sofa to the front of the sleeper mechanism.
  • Fold: as a click-clack it opens at least 49.6 inches deep (the bed’s width; our reading), against 44.5 inches closed.
  • Nova: no open depth is printed, but the bed alone is 75 inches long, so it reaches at least 75 inches from the wall when open (our reading).
  • Morgan: the trundle is 41.25 inches wide, so with it pulled fully clear the frame and trundle take about 85 inches from the wall (44 + 41.25, our arithmetic).

Add the 18 to 24 inches of walking space to those depths and you get the floor each one needs from the wall: at least 68 to 74 inches for the Fold, at least 93 to 99 for the Nova, 102 to 108 for the Neva, about 103 to 109 for the Morgan with its trundle out and 108.5 to 114.5 for the Leah (our arithmetic). Where the open bed crosses a main walkway, use 30 to 36 inches instead of 18 to 24. A coffee table 18 inches from the sofa, the gap one sofa maker’s delivery guide plans on, sits inside the open bed of the Nova, the Leah, the Neva and the Morgan, which reach at least 38 inches past their closed fronts; the Fold opens at least 5 inches deeper than it stands closed, so measure it against your table (our arithmetic). For those four, plan where the table goes on guest nights (our suggestion); see coffee table height for everyday spacing.

5. Weight capacity

Two of the five listings print one. The Nova lists 750 lb and the Fold 500 lb, in each one’s general specifications. The Leah, Neva and Morgan pages don’t list a weight capacity; if two adults will share the bed, ask before you order (our suggestion).

6. Delivery and assembly

One sofa maker’s delivery guide sets the test: the narrowest point of the way in must be larger than at least one of the sofa’s smaller dimensions, usually its depth or its height when tilted. If the sofa comes boxed, check the box too. Allow an extra 1 to 2 inches of wiggle room on top, as another maker’s delivery FAQ suggests, because its delivery team may refuse an item it doesn’t think will fit.

  • Nova: box 76.4 x 38.2 x 26.2 inches, 290 lb packed; the box is about 10½ inches shorter and 9 inches lower than the sofa, but its 38.2-inch side is 1.2 inches more than the sofa’s depth (our comparison).
  • Fold: box 79.1 x 51.2 x 14.6 inches, 188 lb packed.
  • Neva: box 86 x 42.5 x 37 inches, 2 inches longer and 1.5 inches deeper than the sofa and the same height (our comparison); the sofa weighs 279 lb.
  • Morgan: ships in two boxes with the hardware, and assembly is required; the box sizes are not printed.

The five picks

From the cheapest to the most expensive.

Plank+Beam Morgan Daybed with Trundle (Twin)

$569at 11 October 2026 prices (price for reference only)79.25 x 44 x 32.25 in · twin trundleView it on the brand's site →

For a teen’s room or occasional guests who can each take a single bed (our reading). It is a daybed rather than a sofa: a 79.25 by 44 inch upholstered frame with a pull-out trundle 74.25 by 41.25 by 14.25 inches underneath, so the second bed sits lower than the first. The frame is engineered wood and solid pine in chenille that wipes clean with a damp cloth, and it weighs 119 lb. The listing pitches it at a room that doubles as a hangout spot by day and a sleepover setup by night.

Drawbacks: The description doesn't say whether mattresses are included (its photos show them made up); the trundle takes a twin mattress up to 5 in thick, so check before you order (our suggestion). A twin is narrow for larger adults on one retailer's sleeper guide. No weight capacity is printed, and with the trundle fully out it takes about 85 in from the wall (our arithmetic).

Coddle Fold Convertible Couch

$748at 11 October 2026 prices (price for reference only)78 x 44.5 x 32.3 in · 78 x 49.6 in small doubleView it on the brand's site →

For a small apartment, a studio or a home office, where the open bed has to stay out of the walkway. It opens at least 49.6 inches deep (the bed’s width; our reading), the least of the five on these figures, and its box is 14.6 inches high, the slimmest of the three boxes printed here (our comparison). Its split back and adjustable arms give up to 16 positions, and the arms double as pillows. The seat is 16.1 inches high and 26 inches deep, the bed sits at the same 16.1 inches, and each arm has one standard outlet and two USB ports. It weighs 138 lb and lists a 500 lb weight capacity.

Drawbacks: The bed is a small double 49.6 in wide, narrower than a 54 in US full, and you sleep on the seat foam rather than a separate mattress (our reading). The same page gives the bed as 79 in long in its feature list and 78 in in its spec table.

Coddle Nova Full-Sized Sleeper Sofa

$1,999at 11 October 2026 prices (price for reference only)87 x 37 x 35.4 in · 75 x 54 in fullView it on the brand's site →

For a living room where the sleeper is also the everyday sofa, and the guest is one adult. Of the five, it is the one whose bed lists both coils and foam: a 75 by 54 inch full mattress topped with 4 inches of memory foam, on sinuous springs and pocket coils, the coil-and-foam mix one retailer’s guide calls hybrid (our reading). Closed it is 87 by 37 inches, with a 19.3 inch high, 24 inch deep seat. It lists a 750 lb weight capacity, weighs 261.4 lb, has two outlets, a USB and a USB-C port in each arm, and is upholstered on all sides so it can stand away from the wall. For a sectional, the Nova Full-Size Sleeper Sectional with Storage Chaise has the same 75 by 54 inch bed, also a trundle that pulls out from underneath, with a lift-up storage chaise, 86.6 by 59.9 inches closed, at $2,399 at 11 October 2026 prices (price for reference only).

Drawbacks: The open depth is not printed; the bed alone is 75 in long, so it reaches at least that far from the wall (our reading). The box is shorter and lower than the sofa, but its 38.2 in side is 1.2 in more than the sofa's depth, so check both shapes against the narrowest door.

La-Z-Boy Leah Queen Sleep Sofa

$2,759at 11 October 2026 prices (price for reference only)82 x 38.5 x 38 in · 60 x 71.5 in queenView it on the brand's site →

For two adults on occasional nights (our reading), for $1,740 less than the Neva (our arithmetic), in a room with 108.5 to 114.5 inches from the wall (our arithmetic). It is the one pick whose mattress is listed as innerspring: a quilted queen 60 inches wide and 5.5 inches thick, included as the standard mattress, above the 4 to 5 inches one retailer’s guide calls typical for a pull-out. Closed it is 82 by 38.5 by 38 inches, with a seat 21 inches high and 20.5 deep, and it weighs 175 lb. Tape out its 90.5-inch extended depth (our suggestion). Its pieces are hand crafted, and variations from the standard dimensions can occur, on the same page.

Drawbacks: The mattress is 71.5 in long, shorter than the Nova's full at 75 in and 8.5 in shorter than one retailer's approximate 80 in queen (our arithmetic), and fully extended it takes 90.5 in, the deepest of the open depths printed here. The price is for the Stone Social Club chenille cover; the page lists 586 cover options and the price changes with the cover: the Poppy floral shown beside it is $4,399. No weight capacity or box size is printed.

Sixpenny Neva Sleeper Sofa (Queen)

$4,499at 11 October 2026 prices (price for reference only)84 x 41 x 37 in · open 84 x 84 inView it on the brand's site →

For two adults, and for a room that can give it 102 to 108 inches from the wall (our arithmetic). It is the one pick that prints both its open width and depth, 84 by 84 inches, so you can tape it out. The bed is a tri-fold mechanism with a quilted 3.5 inch mattress of high-density, high-resiliency foam in a cotton cover; the frame is kiln-dried hardwood and plywood. The seat cushions are foam wrapped in loose feather-down or poly fill, which Sixpenny says benefits from periodic fluffing. The page notes dimensions may vary by an inch or two. For a chaise version, the Neva Sleeper Chaise Sectional uses the same 58 by 77.5 by 3.5 inch mattress, opens to 81 by 84 inches and is 123 by 83 inches overall, from $7,349 at 11 October 2026 prices (price for reference only).

Drawbacks: The mattress is 3.5 in thick, below the 4 to 5 in one retailer's guide calls typical for a pull-out, and at 58 x 77.5 in it is narrower and shorter than that guide's approximate 60 x 80 in queen. No weight capacity is printed. The three faux fur fabrics and one printed cotton linen cost $4,649.

Which sleeper fits your room and how often you sleep on it?

A guest room used a few times a year. Tape out the open footprint first, with the bed, nightstand and door swing it has to clear (our suggestion). For two single guests or children, the Morgan gives two twin beds for $569, plus mattresses if they aren’t included. For one adult, with at least 93 to 99 inches from the wall, the Nova gives a separate full mattress (our suggestion, from the depths above).

A living room, used as the everyday sofa. Check the seat as you would on any couch: the Nova’s seat is 19.3 inches high and 24 deep, the Leah’s 21 high and 20.5 deep, the Neva’s 21 high and 23 deep with the back cushion in place, the Fold’s 16.1 high and 26 deep. For a chaise or more seats, the sectional versions of the Nova and Neva above keep the same bed size (the Nova sectional’s page doesn’t mention the 4-inch memory foam top).

Guests most weekends / a frequent host. For a frequent host, that same retailer’s guide suggests a pull-out with a hybrid mattress. Of the five, the Nova lists coils under a foam layer (our reading); the Leah has an innerspring mattress and the Neva a foam one. A full is cozy for two adults and may not be ideal for stays of more than a night, on that guide. So for one guest at a time, the Nova; for couples, the Leah if they fit its 71.5-inch mattress and the room takes its 90.5-inch extension, otherwise the longer Neva (our reading).

A small apartment or studio. That guide suggests a twin or full sleeper, or a futon, for a small footprint. Of the five, that points to the Fold, which needs the least floor on these figures (our reading).

Where these numbers come from

Dimensions, mattress details, weight capacities and box sizes come from each brand’s product page, and the prices are the ones shown there without a code, all read on 11 October 2026. The mechanism types, mattress types, typical thickness, open bed sizes and clearance figures come from one retailer’s sleeper and sofa size guides and from one sofa maker’s measuring and delivery guides. Open depths not printed by a brand and the room depths are our arithmetic from those figures.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sleeper sofa?

The one whose bed suits the sleeper and whose open size fits the room. Of the five here, the Coddle Nova has a separate 75 x 54 inch full bed with a 4 inch memory foam top over coils, on a sofa 87 inches long; the La-Z-Boy Leah has a 60 x 71.5 inch queen innerspring mattress and extends to 90.5 inches; the Sixpenny Neva queen has a 58 x 77.5 inch mattress and opens to 84 inches deep; the Coddle Fold click-clack opens at least 49.6 inches deep (the bed's width; our reading) for a small room; and the Plank+Beam Morgan daybed gives two twin beds, though its description doesn't say whether mattresses are included.

How much room do you need for a sleeper sofa?

Take the open depth and add 18 to 24 inches of walking space, the figure one retailer's sleeper guide suggests around the open bed; if the open bed blocks a main walkway or door path, the same retailer's size guide asks for 30 to 36 inches. On the sleeper guide, most pull-out sleepers extend at least 60 inches forward. The Neva queen opens to 84 inches, so it needs 102 to 108 inches from the wall; the Fold opens at least 49.6 inches deep, so at least 68 to 74 (our arithmetic).

How thick should a sleeper sofa mattress be?

On one retailer's sleeper guide, 4 to 5 inches is typical for a pull-out. The Nova's memory foam top is 4 inches, the Leah's innerspring mattress 5.5 inches and the Neva's foam mattress 3.5 inches. Click-clacks and futons have no separate mattress, and that guide suggests judging their foam density and construction, not just the thickness.

What size is a sleeper sofa bed?

One retailer's guide gives approximate open sizes of 38 x 75 inches for a twin, 54 x 75 for a full, 60 x 80 for a queen and 76 x 80 for a king. Real beds vary: the Neva's queen mattress is 58 x 77.5 inches, the Leah's 60 x 71.5, and the Fold's small double is 49.6 inches wide against 54 for a US full.
