Best Sectional Couch Picks and Sizes for Small Living Rooms

Five sectionals from $1,599 to $4,499, each with its overall size, seat depth, cover and how it ships, plus which of the five suit a small living room.

A light modular sectional in the corner of a living room under tall windows, with a patterned rug and a potted plant

The chaise lands on the wrong side of the room, or the long run ends up across the walkway. Shopping by the label “L-shaped” or by seat count hides how far apart the shapes are: across the five below, the overall width runs from 76 to 108.5 inches and the deepest point from 62 to 76, so the long side alone differs by 32½ inches (our arithmetic from each page’s overall size). The checks that sort that out come first, then five sectionals priced from $1,599 to $4,499, each with a plain note on who it is for and where it falls short.

What should you check before you pick a sectional?

Five things decide whether a sectional suits your room, your seat and your front door.

  1. The shape and the whole footprint. An L-shaped sectional joins two seating pieces at 90 degrees with a corner piece and suits a corner and small to medium rooms; a chaise sectional is technically an L with a chaise at one end and is called a space-saver for smaller rooms; a U-shape suits entertaining but needs more floor (these three descriptions are from one retailer’s sectional guide). L-shapes usually seat 3 to 4 comfortably, and its rule of thumb is one seat cushion, about 18 inches, per person. Read both overall numbers on a listing, the long run and the depth at the chaise, and tape them on the floor, as that guide suggests. Leave at least 30 inches for a main walkway and 18 or so between the sectional and a coffee table; the same retailer’s sofa size guide gives 30 to 36 inches for main walkways, and the sectional guide gives 18 to 24 inches between a sectional and other furniture such as side tables.
  2. Which side the chaise goes. Stand facing the spot where it will go: a chaise on your left makes it left-facing, on your right right-facing, and a reversible chaise lets you change the side after purchase (same sectional guide). Put the chaise along a wall so the middle of the room stays open, and keep it out of a walkway or doorway. Makers differ: the Albany Park Lido is ordered left- or right-facing, Floyd lists left-side and right-side chaise versions, Sixpenny and Floyd pieces clip together so they can be rearranged, and the IKEA page text doesn’t say which side its chaise goes on.
  3. Seat depth and height for how you sit. The general ranges are in our standard couch size guide, so here are only the five picks’ figures: seat height runs from 14.5 inches (Floyd) to 20.5 (Sundays), and seat depth, with the back cushion in place or not stated, from 21⅝ to 26.5; without it, the Gabriel is 31 and the Lido 30, and the Lido’s spec block prints 37.5 to 62 (see the note under the table). The Sundays prints 20.5 high and 26.5 deep.
  4. The cover. Take removable or washable only as each maker states it. IKEA’s cover is removable and machine washable on a warm normal cycle, but its cushions are marked do not wash. Sundays’ slip, cushion and frame covers are removable, and the cushion covers can be machine washed cold on a gentle cycle. Sixpenny strongly recommends dry cleaning its natural and recycled fabrics for regular laundering, with machine washing possible with care. Albany Park lists zip-off machine-washable covers for its Sand basketweave only, not the velvet priced here. Floyd’s page names its performance fabric but gives no care steps.
  5. How it arrives, against your door. Measure doorways, hallways, stairwells and elevators and add 1 to 2 inches of wiggle room, as one maker’s delivery FAQ suggests, because its team may refuse a delivery it doesn’t think will fit. IKEA ships the VIMLE as 8 packages, the longest 57¾ inches; Albany Park ships the Lido in 4 boxes, the longest 77⅞; Sixpenny ships the Gabriel in 4 boxes on a 35 x 35 inch base; Sundays ships in 3 boxes; Floyd’s page prints no box sizes. The door-and-stair measuring steps are in our standard couch size guide.

The picks

From the cheapest to the dearest. Each price is the one shown on its page without a code.

IKEA VIMLE Sofa with Chaise, Gunnared medium gray

$1,599 (Gunnared medium gray)Price for reference only99¼ x 64⅝ x 32⅝ in · 8 packagesView it on the brand's site →

For a first sectional or a rental on a budget: it is the one pick under $2,000, and $1,011 below the next one (our arithmetic). A sofa section 99¼ inches wide and 38⅝ deep, with a chaise side that reaches 64⅝ inches, 32⅝ inches high. The seat is 18⅞ inches high and 21⅝ deep, the chaise seat 49¼ deep, and the seat cushions are listed as high-resilience foam over a pocket spring unit. The cover is removable and its care label says machine wash warm on a normal cycle. It ships as eight packages, the largest the 57¾ inch chaise section at 105 lb.

Drawbacks: The page text doesn't say which side the chaise goes on or whether it can move, so check before you order (our suggestion). The cushions are marked do not wash.

Floyd Form Sectional, 2-Piece L with Left Side Chaise

$2,610 (Mineral)Price for reference only96.5 x 62.5 x 27.4 in · seat 14.5 high, 26.5 deepView it on the brand's site →

For a low, modular sectional where you choose the chaise side: the page prices the left-side and right-side versions of this L the same, $2,610 in Mineral. Overall it is 96.5 x 62.5 x 27.4 inches with a 51.5 inch chaise length; the seat is 14.5 inches high and 26.5 deep, the arms 23.3 high and 11 wide, and each piece is rated to 300 lb. Mineral is a performance fabric, 100% polyester, and the page recommends its Performance Fabric or Boucle options for the most pet-friendly sectional. Metal clips hold the units together and can be disengaged to rearrange.

Drawbacks: The 14.5 inch seat is the lowest of the five, 3 inches below the next (our arithmetic), so sit on a low seat first if anyone in the house has trouble standing up from one (our suggestion). The page prints no box sizes or cover care steps and lists the item as made to order. Four other colours (Off-White, Charcoal, Marine, Cypress) are also $2,610; the rest cost $2,990 to $5,070.

Albany Park Lido Chaise Sectional, Almond Performance Velvet

$3,640 (Almond Performance Velvet)Price for reference only108.5 x 62 x 33 in · 4 boxesView it on the brand's site →

For a room with a long wall and someone who wants a deep chaise: at 108.5 inches it has the longest run of the five, yet at 62 inches it is the shallowest on these figures (our comparison). The seat is 18 inches high and the arms 23.5, and the whole sectional weighs 200 lb. The chaise seat is 48 inches deep with the back cushion and 54.5 without, and the sofa seat 23.5 and 30, on the page’s Q&A. You choose left- or right-facing when you order, and the page pitches the Lido at the apartment and open plan that still wants a sectional. It ships in four boxes, the heaviest 100 lb.

Drawbacks: One size only, on the page's Q&A. The longest box is 77⅞ inches, so check the hallway turn first. Machine-washable zip-off covers are listed for the Sand basketweave only, not the velvet priced here.

Sundays Get Together 3-Piece Modular Sectional, Standard

$3,770 (Newport Stripe, Standard)Price for reference only76 x 76 x 37 in · seat depth 26.5View it on the brand's site →

For the smallest footprint of the five: 76 x 76 inches is 5,776 square inches against 6,031 for the Floyd L (our arithmetic). It is 37 inches high with a seat 20.5 inches high and 26.5 deep, an L of three pieces including an ottoman (among them, its page lists a corner chair 38 x 38 x 37 inches and an ottoman 38 x 38 x 20.5 inches, width x depth x height) held together with the connectors included, plus 3 seat cushions, 4 back cushions and 2 throw cushions. Newport Stripe is a stain-resistant performance fabric, 100% polyester, and the page lists the slip, cushion and frame covers as removable, with the cushion covers machine washable cold on a gentle cycle. It arrives in three boxes, and the page offers free in-home delivery and assembly.

Drawbacks: The page lists a seating capacity of 2, so it is a two-person sectional to sit on (our reading), and it prints no box sizes. It costs $1,160 more than the Floyd L while covering 255 fewer square inches of floor (our arithmetic).

Sixpenny Gabriel Chaise Sectional, 4-Piece, Cotton Canvas

$4,499 (Cotton Canvas)Price for reference only99 x 66 x 32 in · 4 boxes, 35 x 35 in baseView it on the brand's site →

For a family room that may grow: the page lists the pieces as 33 x 33 inch chairs, left and right arm versions and a sectional ottoman, joined by zinc alligator clips, and the 99 x 66 overall size reads as three seats across with the ottoman finishing the chaise (our reading). The seat is 17.5 inches high and 23 deep with the back cushion (31 without), and the arms are 26.5 high and 2 wide. It ships in three boxes of 35 x 35 x 28 inches and one 35 x 35 x 18½, the shortest longest-box side of the three picks that print box sizes (our comparison). Feather Down or Poly Fill costs the same in Cotton Canvas; the other fabrics cost $4,849 or $5,199.

Drawbacks: The dearest of the five, $2,900 above the IKEA (our arithmetic). The cover is a loose slipcover and the page strongly recommends dry cleaning; the cushions are soft with loose fill, and the page says periodic fluffing goes a long way. Dimensions can vary by an inch or two, on the page.

Best sectionals for small spaces

On one retailer’s guide, an L-shaped or chaise sectional is usually the best choice for a smaller room, often better than several smaller pieces when it is the main seating, and a larger L can suit a compact room for the same reason. That retailer’s sofa size guide calls about 90 inches a compact L. Read against that, the five split like this (our reading):

  • Sundays, 76 x 76 inches. A three-piece L including an ottoman, with the shortest long side, 14 inches under that 90 (our arithmetic), and the smallest footprint. It is also the deepest of the five and seats 2 on its page, so check the corner it will fill.
  • Floyd, 96.5 x 62.5 x 27.4 inches. The lowest of the five at 27.4 high, modular, with the chaise side chosen as a configuration. Its plain two-piece without the chaise is 90 x 36.5 inches and $2,340 in Mineral, if the room can’t take a chaise.
  • Albany Park Lido, 62 inches deep. The shallowest of the five, with a 108.5 inch run that needs a long wall.
  • IKEA VIMLE, 99¼ x 64⅝ inches. The cheapest, and its largest package is 57¾ inches against the Lido’s 77⅞ (our comparison), which matters on a tight turn.
  • Sixpenny Gabriel, 99 x 66 inches. Modular pieces 33 inches square in 35 inch boxes, boxes whose longest side is the shortest of the three picks that print box sizes (our comparison), so the easiest to carry round a tight turn (our reading).

Then tape the footprint, as that sectional guide suggests: lay painter’s tape to the pick’s width and depth, chaise side included, and keep clear the 30 inch walkway and the 18 inches in front for a coffee table, both figures from the same retailer; our coffee table height guide covers that gap.

Which sectional fits how you use it?

Lounging and napping. Go by the chaise. The Lido’s chaise seat is 48 inches deep with the back cushion and 54.5 without, the Floyd’s chaise length is 51.5 and the IKEA’s chaise seat 49¼; the pages don’t say how the last two were measured, so lie down on a taped outline first (our suggestion). The Gabriel prints no chaise length, and the Sundays lists an ottoman, 38 inches deep, where the others have a chaise (our reading).

A family with kids or pets. Look for covers you can take off. The IKEA VIMLE has a removable cover that machine washes warm at $1,599, and the Sundays lists removable slip, cushion and frame covers on a stain-resistant fabric at $3,770. The Floyd page recommends its Performance Fabric or Boucle options for the most pet-friendly sectional, with no care steps on the page. The Gabriel’s slipcover comes off, but the page strongly recommends dry cleaning.

Moving often or renting. Pieces and boxes matter more than the finish. The Gabriel’s 33 inch pieces ship in 35 inch boxes and clip together, the Floyd’s clip apart to rearrange and the Sundays comes with connectors, while the Lido’s longest box is 77⅞ inches and the VIMLE’s longest package 57¾.

If you want the sectional to sleep a guest, our best sleeper sofa guide also points to two sleeper sectionals.

Where these numbers come from

Sizes, seat figures, covers, box sizes and prices (the ones shown without a code, for the configurations named) come from each brand’s product page, each read on 17 October 2026. Shapes, orientation, clearance and seating rules come from two guides by one retailer, and one maker’s delivery FAQ gives the door margin. The gaps, areas and rankings among the five are our arithmetic from those figures.

Frequently asked questions

What size sectional for a small living room?

One retailer's sectional guide calls an L-shaped or chaise sectional usually the best choice for a smaller space, and often a better one than several smaller pieces when it is the main seating. Its sofa size guide puts a compact L at about 90 inches long. Of the five here, the Sundays Get Together is 76 x 76 inches, the Floyd Form L 96.5 x 62.5, the Albany Park Lido 108.5 x 62, the IKEA VIMLE 99¼ x 64⅝ and the Sixpenny Gabriel 99 x 66. Tape the overall width and depth on the floor before you order, as that guide suggests.

Is an L-shaped or a U-shaped sectional better?

On one retailer's sectional guide, an L-shape suits a corner and small to medium rooms and usually seats 3 to 4 comfortably, while a U-shape is better for 5 or more and needs more floor space. All five are L-shaped or chaise sectionals on their pages; the Sundays is a 76 x 76 inch L of three pieces, one of them an ottoman. None is a U-shape.

Should a sectional be left-facing or right-facing?

Stand facing the spot where it will go: a chaise on your left makes it left-facing, on your right right-facing, on one retailer's guide, which also suggests putting the chaise along a wall and not across a walkway or doorway. A reversible chaise lets you change sides after purchase. Among the five here, Albany Park asks you to pick left- or right-facing when you order the Lido, and Floyd lists left-side and right-side chaise versions of its L at the same $2,610 in Mineral.

How deep should a sectional be?

Seat depth is generally 20 to 24 inches on one retailer's sofa size guide, shallower for upright sitting and deeper for lounging. With the back cushion in place or not stated, the five print 21⅝ to 26.5 inches; without it, the Gabriel is 31 and the Lido 30 (its page's Q&A; the Lido's spec block prints 37.5 to 62). Chaise seats are deeper: 48 inches with the back cushion on the Lido, 49¼ on the IKEA VIMLE and a 51.5 inch chaise length on the Floyd.
