Pull Out Chair Bed: Sizes, Mattresses and Picks Compared

Which pull out chair bed to buy: five picks from $648 to $3,442, compared on open bed size, mattress, floor space it needs and the drawback of each one.

A small bedroom with a made bed, grey built-in cabinets along the wall, sheer curtains at a tall window and a desk chair at the right edge

Your guest’s feet hang over the end, or the bed unfolds straight into the desk chair you meant to keep. The usual cause is trusting the word “twin”: the five chair beds below are all sold as twin-size or chair-and-a-half sleepers, yet as chairs on their own their printed beds run from 60 to 79.3 inches long (81.1 for the Switch with its ottoman), and one mattress is only 24 inches wide, where one retailer’s sleeper sofa guide figures about 38 by 75 inches for an open twin. We start with what to check on any listing, then go through five picks priced from $648 to $3,442, with who each one suits and what it gives up.

The short answer

Pick Best for Bed when open Price (reference)
Coddle Switch Convertible Chair-and-a-Half A nap or sleepover bed, or a longer bed by adding the $198 ottoman 60 x 40 in; 81.1 x 40 in with the ottoman $648 (chair only)
Coddle Aura Convertible Twin Sleeper Chair A home-office armchair that sleeps one, with a printed 500 lb capacity 40.3 x 64 in as printed, no separate mattress $1,249
Coddle Tera Convertible Twin Chair Sleeper The longest bed of the five chairs on their own 39 x 79.3 in, no separate mattress $1,299
La-Z-Boy Charlie Twin Sleep Chair An included innerspring mattress; 91.5 in from the chair back 32 x 71.5 in mattress, 5.5 in thick $2,489
Amish Calvert Twin Sleeper Chair (DutchCrafters) Solid hardwood, 88 in from the wall when open 24 x 72 in mattress, 5 in innerspring From $3,442

Chair bed or sleeper sofa?

A chair bed is for one sleeper in a room that has no space for a sofa. Four of the five print a bed width that reads as the narrow side: 24, 32, 39 and 40 inches; the Aura prints 40.3 D x 64 W without saying which side is the length. On the same retailer’s sleeper guide, a twin of about 38 x 75 inches suits one adult or child and is narrow for larger adults, while a full of about 54 x 75 suits one adult comfortably and is cozy for two. Two people are a reason to look at a queen: that guide calls a full cozy for two and says it may not be ideal for stays of more than a night. Our guide to the best sleeper sofa covers those sizes, plus click-clack sofas and a twin daybed with a trundle.

What should you check on a chair bed listing?

Six things decide whether a chair bed suits you.

  1. The mechanism. The five listings describe it differently. The Charlie and the Calvert pull a hidden bed out from under the seat; the Tera extends on a patented locking mechanism and folds back with a release handle at the back of the seat; the Aura unfolds the seat cushion into the bed; the Switch reclines flat, and a matching ottoman extends it. The Tera and Aura pages leave their mechanism field blank and the Switch’s says N/A, so read the description.
  2. The bed size when open, and whether there is a mattress. Compare the printed length and width with the approximate 38 x 75 inches of an open twin on the same retailer’s sofa size guide, its figure for an open twin sleeper sofa. Then ask what you lie on: a mattress (Charlie, Calvert), the unfolded seat cushion (Aura) or an integrated cushioned surface (Tera).
  3. The open length and the floor it needs. Take the open depth and add the 18 to 24 inches of walking space the sleeper guide suggests generally leaving around an open bed; where the bed crosses a main walkway, the size guide gives 30 to 36 inches (both are sleeper sofa and sofa guidance, not chair bed rules). From the printed figures (our arithmetic): the Calvert prints 88 inches from the wall when open, so about 106 to 112 inches of floor; the Charlie prints 91.5 inches fully extended from the chair back, so about 109.5 to 115.5. The Tera, Aura and Switch print no open depth. If the Tera’s 79.3 inch bed runs out from the wall, it needs at least 79.3 inches, so about 97.3 to 103.3 with walking space; the Switch’s 60 inch bed needs 78 to 84, and 99.1 to 105.1 with the 81.1 inch ottoman set (our reading). Tape the footprint on the floor before you order (our suggestion).
  4. How it sits as a chair. Seat height by depth, in inches: Switch 16 by 23.2, Calvert 18.5 by 21.5, Aura 19.6 by 21.5, Tera 19.8 by 23, Charlie 21.5 by 21.5. Closed width or length: Aura 39.8 wide, Calvert 42, Tera 46, Charlie 50.5, Switch 55.5 long.
  5. Weight capacity. Two of the five print one: the Switch 400 lb and the Aura 500 lb. The Tera, Charlie and Calvert pages do not (the Charlie’s 200 lb is the chair’s own weight). If the sleeper is a large adult, ask before you order (our suggestion).
  6. How it ships. The Switch’s box is 49.2 x 42.9 x 30.3 inches and 170 lb packed. The Switch page’s chair FAQ says most of Coddle’s sleeper chairs ship by UPS threshold delivery; the Aura and Tera pages say they are delivered by white glove service, placed and set up for you. Coddle’s free white glove delivery is listed for larger orders, so check the Switch’s delivery at checkout (our suggestion). Measure doors, halls and stairs against the box and the chair (see our guide to standard couch size).

The picks

From the cheapest to the most expensive. A sleeper sofa chair, or chair sofa bed as some searches word it, is a single seat that opens to one bed, and these five are that.

Coddle Switch Convertible Chair-and-a-Half

$648 (chair only, Asphalt velvet)Price for reference only55.5 x 41.3 x 33.9 in · 60 x 40 in bed, 81.1 x 40 with ottomanView it on the brand's site →

For a nap bed, a child’s sleepover or a room that needs a big armchair first: it is the cheapest here by $601 (our arithmetic) and the page calls it wider than a standard chair, with a seat 16 inches high and 23.2 deep. It reclines flat on its own, and with the ottoman it becomes an 81.1 by 40 inch bed, which Coddle calls a twin XL. It lists a 400 lb weight capacity and weighs 136.7 lb, with two outlets, a USB and a USB-C port built into the arm.

Drawbacks: On its own the bed is 60 inches long, 15 inches short of the approximate 75 inch twin on one retailer's guide (our arithmetic). The longer 81.1 inch bed needs the matching Switch Ottoman at $198, so $846 for the pair (our arithmetic). The page lists its mechanism as N/A and does not say whether a separate mattress is included. The page marks the chair and the ottoman as Clearance.

Coddle Aura Convertible Twin Sleeper Chair

$1,249Price for reference only39.8 W x 51.3 D x 36.5 H in as printed · bed 40.3 D x 64 W inView it on the brand's site →

For a home office chair that sleeps one guest, in a room where you want a printed 500 lb weight capacity. The seat cushion unfolds into the bed, which Coddle’s FAQ says needs no separate mattress and no complicated setup. The seat is 19.6 inches high and 21.5 deep, the arms 26 inches high, and it weighs 198 lb with two outlets, a USB and a USB-C port.

Drawbacks: The page prints the bed as 40.3 D x 64 W and does not say which side is the length; if 64 inches is the length, it is 11 inches short of the approximate 75 inch twin (our arithmetic). There is no separate mattress, and the cushion covers are not removable. No open depth or box size is printed.

Coddle Tera Convertible Twin Chair Sleeper

$1,299Price for reference only46 x 38.2 x 37.4 in · 39 x 79.3 in bedView it on the brand's site →

For a guest who needs a full-length bed from a chair that is 46 inches wide closed. Its 39 by 79.3 inch sleep surface is the longest of the five chairs on their own, 4.3 inches longer and 1 inch wider than the approximate 38 by 75 inch twin (our arithmetic), and Coddle’s FAQ calls it comparable in size to a standard twin. The lock holds the bed in place when extended, and a hidden handle at the back of the seat releases it. The seat is 19.8 inches high and 23 deep, with a back cushion and a lumbar pillow included.

Drawbacks: No weight capacity is printed, and the mechanism field is blank. The open depth is not printed: if the 79.3 inch length runs out from the wall, it needs at least that much (our reading). There is no separate mattress. At 241.1 lb it is the heaviest of the four chairs here with a printed weight (our comparison).

La-Z-Boy Charlie Twin Sleep Chair

$2,489 (Whisper cover, standard mattress)Price for reference only50.5 x 38 x 37 in · 32 x 71.5 in mattress · 91.5 in extendedView it on the brand's site →

For a guest room used a few times a year, where you want a real mattress: a 5.5 inch quilted innerspring, included as the standard mattress, on a chair 50.5 inches wide with a 39 inch seat width. The seat is 21.5 inches high and 21.5 deep, and the chair weighs 200 lb. The six popular covers shown were all $2,489; the page lists 606 cover options and the price can change with the cover. The larger Olson Twin Sleep Chair uses the same mattress size in a 56 by 39.5 inch body and extends to 93 inches, at $2,489 on the cover shown.

Drawbacks: The mattress is 32 inches wide and 71.5 inches long, 6 inches narrower and 3.5 inches shorter than the approximate 38 x 75 inch twin (our arithmetic). It takes 91.5 inches from the back of the chair fully extended (so from the wall if the chair is flush against it), about 109.5 to 115.5 with walking space (our arithmetic). No weight capacity is printed, and the page says hand-crafted pieces can vary from the standard dimensions.

Amish Calvert Twin Sleeper Chair with Pull-Out Bed

From $3,442 (Red Oak, upholstery to choose)Price for reference only42 x 40 x 33.5 in · 24 x 72 in mattress · 88 in from the wallView it on the brand's site →

For a home office or den where the chair should look like furniture, sold by DutchCrafters. The frame is 100% solid hardwood, the page says it is made by Amish artisans in Ohio, with removable foam seat cushions and a 5 inch innerspring mattress. It is 42 inches wide closed, and the page asks for about 88 inches from the wall when it is fully open (106 to 112 with walking space; our arithmetic).

Drawbacks: The mattress is 24 inches wide, 14 inches narrower than the approximate 38 inch twin (our arithmetic), so it suits a child or a small adult (our reading). The price goes up with Brown Maple or Rustic Cherry (+$229) and Cherry or Quarter Sawn White Oak (+$405), and with throw pillows. It is made to order, and no weight capacity is printed.

Which chair bed fits your room?

A home office with a desk. Measure from the wall behind the chair to the desk or shelf in front of it. The Calvert needs about 106 to 112 inches with walking space, and the Charlie 109.5 to 115.5. Where you have less, the Tera at about 97 to 103 gives the longest bed for the floor and the Switch alone needs about 78 to 84 for a 60 inch bed if the bed runs out from the wall (our reading; our arithmetic, see the checks above). The Aura’s open depth is not printed, so tape it out.

A guest room used a few times a year. Pick by the mattress: the Charlie has the wider one, 32 inches, and the Calvert a 24 inch one, both innerspring. For a guest who needs a full-length bed, the Tera’s 79.3 inches is the longest of the five chairs on their own.

A kid’s room and sleepovers. The Switch alone is the shortest printed bed at 60 inches, the Aura’s longer side is 64, and both list a weight capacity (400 and 500 lb). For a child who keeps growing, the Tera’s 79.3 inch bed or the Switch with its ottoman at 81.1 inches lasts longer (our reading).

A studio where the chair is the only seat. Check the seat first: 16 to 21.5 inches high and 21.5 to 23.2 deep across the five. For two sleepers, see the best sleeper sofa picks instead, and our furniture buying guide for the rest of the room.

Where these numbers come from

Dimensions, mattress details, weight capacities and prices (shown without a code) come from each seller’s product page, read on 17 October 2026: Coddle for the Switch, Aura and Tera, La-Z-Boy for the Charlie and Olson, and DutchCrafters for the Calvert. The twin size and clearance figures come from one retailer’s sleeper sofa and sofa size guides. Floor needs and size differences are our arithmetic from those figures.

Frequently asked questions

Are pull out chair beds comfortable to sleep on?

It depends on the bed under you, and the pages here print different things. The La-Z-Boy Charlie lists a 5.5 inch quilted innerspring mattress and the Amish Calvert a 5 inch innerspring mattress, against the 4 to 5 inches one retailer's guide calls typical for a pull-out sleeper sofa. The three Coddle pages (Switch, Aura and Tera) each list the bed surface as sinuous springs and pocket coil mattress technology, without a thickness; the Aura and Tera pages say there is no separate mattress, and Coddle's FAQ says its cushions are designed to start out slightly firmer.

What size is a chair bed when it opens?

Of the five here, the printed beds are 60 x 40 inches (Coddle Switch alone; 81.1 x 40 with its ottoman), 79.3 x 39 (Tera), 71.5 x 32 (Charlie mattress), 72 x 24 (Calvert mattress) and 40.3 x 64 (Aura, which does not say which side is the length). One retailer's sleeper sofa guide gives about 38 x 75 inches for an open twin, so only the Tera and the Switch with its ottoman are both longer and wider than that (our arithmetic).

How much room does a pull out chair bed need?

Take the open depth and add walking space: one retailer's sleeper sofa guide suggests generally leaving 18 to 24 inches around the open bed. The Calvert prints 88 inches from the wall when open, so about 106 to 112 inches of floor; the Charlie prints 91.5 inches fully extended from the chair back, so about 109.5 to 115.5 (our arithmetic). The Tera, Aura and Switch do not print an open depth.

Does a chair bed come with a mattress?

Two of the five do: the Charlie lists a standard innerspring mattress at no extra cost, and the Calvert lists a 5 inch innerspring mattress among its standard features. Coddle's Aura FAQ says no separate mattress is required, and the Tera FAQ says there is no separate mattress to buy or store. The Switch page does not say either way, so check before you order (our suggestion).
