Best Washable Rugs for Living Rooms, Compared by Washer Fit

Five washable 8' x 10' rugs from $299 to $999 compared by washer fit: two rated for a home washer, three labelled Commercial, with build, fiber and care notes.

A bright modern living room with an L-shaped grey sofa on a large grey low-pile rug and a wall-mounted TV

A glass of red wine goes over, a spot cleaner only moves the stain around, and the rug that was supposed to survive kids and pets becomes the thing you step over. The usual fix is to buy a “machine washable” rug in the big size and check the washer afterwards, but on one maker’s washer guide a tufted 9’ x 12’ shows no for every machine size listed, and an 8’ x 10’ of the same type needs a 4.5 cu ft drum, while another maker’s guide labels the three 8’ x 10’ rugs picked here Commercial, at 11.5 to 13.5 cu ft. Below are five washable 8’ x 10’ rugs from two makers, $299 to $999, with the washer size each page gives, how each is built, how it is cared for and what it costs.

The short answer

Pick Build Washer size for 8’ x 10’ Best for Price (reference)
Ruggable Cambria Ruby, Flatwoven Two-piece: cover on a pad 3.8+ cu ft (Ruggable guide) A smaller washer: only the cover goes in $579
Ruggable Cambria Ruby, Tufted All-in-One One-piece, built-in non-slip backing 4.5 cu ft (Ruggable guide) A cushioned rug with no separate pad $749
Revival Cardigan One-piece flatweave, pad sold separately 100 lb (13.5 cu ft), labelled Commercial (Revival guide) A soft, bouclé-look flatweave, laundromat wash at 8’ x 10’ $699
Revival Xylo One-piece flatweave, pad sold separately 100 lb (13.5 cu ft), labelled Commercial (Revival guide) The lowest price, if you can use a laundromat $299
Revival Bambino One-piece wool, pad sold separately 80 lb (11.5 cu ft), labelled Commercial (Revival guide) Wool you can wash in a commercial (laundromat) machine $999

At 8’ x 10’ only the two Ruggable picks are rated for a home washer (3.8+ and 4.5 cu ft). Revival’s guide labels all three Revival picks Commercial at 8’ x 10’ (11.5 to 13.5 cu ft), so plan on a laundromat machine (our reading of “Commercial”). At 9’ x 12’ the Cardigan and Xylo are spot clean or dry clean only.

Prices are the 8’ x 10’ prices shown without a discount code; the Ruggable figures are for the Cambria Ruby design, and the Cardigan is $699 in all three colours.

What decides whether a washable rug works

Pick the size for the room first (our area rug guide covers living room layouts), then run any washable rug for a living room through these four checks.

  • Does it fit your washer? Ruggable prints its numbers as a table of minimum drum sizes in cubic feet for each rug type and size. It also warns that “Some larger machine-washable rug sizes are too bulky for standard home appliances and require commercial laundromat washers.” Revival’s product pages open a Washer Guide that starts “Our rugs are compatible with most standard washing machines, but just to be safe, here are a few guidelines”, yet its table labels every size these three rugs are sold in Commercial or spot clean / dry clean only, and lists an 8’ x 10’ as Commercial: 100 lb (13.5 cu ft) for the Cardigan and Xylo and 80 lb (11.5 cu ft) for the Bambino. Its polyester care guide adds not to exceed the washer’s load capacity. Revival’s 8’ x 10’ figures, 11.5 to 13.5 cu ft, are about three times Ruggable’s 3.8 to 4.5 (our arithmetic). Look up your washer’s drum capacity in cubic feet on its label or spec sheet before you order (our suggestion).
  • One piece or two? Ruggable’s flatwoven rug is a cover on a separate pad: the cover goes in the machine and the pad never does. Its tufted all-in-one is a single rug with a built-in non-slip backing. Revival’s pages call their rugs one-piece, yet they still say a separate pad is needed.
  • Fiber and pile. The Ruggable tufted type is 100% polyester and the Revival Cardigan is 100% recycled polyester (PET); the Ruggable page text gives no fiber for its flatwoven type. The Xylo is polyester and cotton, and the Bambino is New Zealand blended wool on cotton. Pile runs from about 1/16 inch (Ruggable flatwoven) to about 3/4 inch (Bambino).
  • Shrinkage and drying. Revival’s pages allow for shrinkage of up to 5% (Cardigan, Bambino) or 2.5% (Xylo); 5% of a 10-foot side is 6 inches (our arithmetic). Ruggable’s care page gives drying times by size and no shrinkage percentage.

The five rugs

Prices are 8’ x 10’ with no discount code. Washer sizes are what the maker prints for that rug type and size.

Cover and pad (two-piece)

Ruggable Cambria Ruby, Flatwoven

$579 (8' x 10')Price for reference onlyCover on a pad · about 1/16 in low pile · washer: 3.8+ cu ft for 8' x 10' · cover alone $409View it on the brand's site →

Best for a smaller washer, because only the cover goes in and the guide asks less of the machine than for the tufted type. The page calls it “Our original 2-piece 2mm (~1/16”) low-pile system”, made for “high-traffic areas & low-clearance doors”. On the washer guide an 8’ x 10’ flatwoven shows yes from 3.8+ cu ft and no at 2.2+, against 4.5 cu ft for the tufted 8’ x 10’ (our reading of the table). The system price includes the pad, which the Revival rugs below do not.

Drawbacks: You handle two pieces: the cover comes off the pad to wash and must be completely dry before it goes back on. The pad is never machine washed. A cushioned pad version costs $679, and the page also says all flatwoven sizes are home machine washable, while the guide asks for 5.5+ cu ft at 10' x 14', so check the guide for your size.

One-piece rugs

Ruggable Cambria Ruby, Tufted All-in-One

$749 (8' x 10')Price for reference only100% polyester · 7 mm medium pile · built-in non-slip backing · washer: 4.5 cu ft for 8' x 10'View it on the brand's site →

Best for a cushioned one-piece rug with no pad to buy. The page lists it as “Home machine washable up to 8’x10’. No Pad Needed”, with a “Built-in non slip backing” and a “Built-in waterproof barrier”; an All-in-One Cushioned Rug Pad is optional. Care is a cold, delicate cycle with the design side facing out, and the care page estimates three dryer cycles (about 135 to 180 minutes) for an 8’ x 10’.

Drawbacks: It needs the largest drum of the two Ruggable types here, 4.5 cu ft at 8' x 10', and the guide shows no for a tufted 9' x 12' at every size it lists. It is the second most expensive of the five, and drying takes three dryer cycles for an 8' x 10' by the care page’s estimate.

Revival Cardigan

$699 (8' x 10')Price for reference only100% recycled polyester · flatweave about 1/3 in thick · handmade in India · washer: 100 lb (13.5 cu ft), CommercialView it on the brand's site →

Best for a soft, textured flatweave in a single piece, if a laundromat wash at 8’ x 10’ suits you. The page describes it as “a washable rug with a bouclé feel accented by button and cable knit motifs”, and says it is “designed to be pliable for washing”, which is why it recommends a pad. Wash with 1 tablespoon of clear, unscented detergent on a cold gentle cycle, then hang dry or tumble dry low. At $699 it is $50 below the Ruggable tufted and $120 above the Ruggable flatwoven system (our arithmetic).

Drawbacks: Its Washer Guide labels the 8' x 10' Commercial (100 lb, 13.5 cu ft), and the 9' x 12' spot clean or dry clean only; the guide’s only Home row is a 5' x 8', a size the Cardigan page does not sell. It shrinks slightly (up to 5%), light shedding, fiber breakage and matting may occur in high-traffic areas, and the rug pad is sold separately.

Revival Xylo

$299 (8' x 10')Price for reference onlyPolyester and cotton on recycled cotton backing · flatweave about 0.31 in thick · washer: 100 lb (13.5 cu ft), CommercialView it on the brand's site →

Best for the lowest price of the five, if you can use a laundromat, and the smallest shrinkage allowance of the three Revival pages here, 2.5%. The page describes it as “imprinted in spacious stripes that alternate in thickness”, in polyester and cotton rather than all polyester. At $299 it costs about half the Ruggable flatwoven system at $579 (our arithmetic). Care is the same as the Cardigan: 1 tablespoon of detergent, cold gentle cycle, hang dry or tumble dry low.

Drawbacks: Its Washer Guide labels the 8' x 10' Commercial (100 lb, 13.5 cu ft), and the 9' x 12' spot clean or dry clean only. The page allows a 5% variance in size, color and texture, and says light shedding, fiber breakage and matting may occur in high-traffic areas. A rug pad is sold separately.

Revival Bambino

$999 (8' x 10')Price for reference onlyNew Zealand blended wool on cotton · hand-tufted · high pile about 3/4 in · washer: 80 lb (11.5 cu ft), CommercialView it on the brand's site →

Best for wool you can wash in a commercial (laundromat) machine. The page calls it “a washable, hand-tufted wool rug carved in a dynamic micro-plaid” and lists a high pile of about 3/4 inch. Care is the same cold gentle cycle with 1 tablespoon of detergent, then hang dry or tumble dry low. With the 8’ x 10’ selected, the page lists a rug pad at $149 (plush) or $119 (low-profile).

Drawbacks: The most expensive of the five, with the highest pile. Its Washer Guide labels the 8' x 10' Commercial (80 lb, 11.5 cu ft). Shedding is typical for most rugs for the first 6 to 9 months, and shrinkage of up to 5% can be expected.

The Ruggable figures are the smallest drum size in the guide with a yes for that rug type and size. A note on the guide page says the minimums are for front load and top load machines with an agitator, and that for a top load machine without an agitator you subtract 0.4 cu ft. Revival’s columns are its own Washer Guide table for each rug, with the Home or Commercial label it prints. Both makers print cubic feet, so the columns compare directly, though Ruggable’s are minimum drum sizes and Revival’s are labelled Home or Commercial.

On the same Ruggable guide, the Plush and Performance Weave types show no for an 8’ x 10’ at every machine size listed, so they are not in the picks.

Washing, drying and shrinkage

  • Ruggable two-piece (flatwoven). Take the cover off the pad, put it in the machine design side out, wash cold on delicate with a mild detergent and no bleach, oxygen brighteners or fabric softener. Tumble dry low or air dry, and make sure the cover is completely dry before it goes back on the pad. “Never machine-wash the separate Rug Pad.”
  • Ruggable all-in-one (tufted). Same cold delicate cycle with the design side facing out, a mild non-bleach detergent and no fabric softener, then tumble dry low or air dry. The care page says a rug that slides after washing may still be damp.
  • Revival (Cardigan, Xylo, Bambino). Each page says 1 tablespoon of clear, unscented detergent on a cold gentle cycle, then hang dry or tumble dry low. For the polyester rugs (the Cardigan, and the Xylo as a polyester and cotton blend) the polyester care guide adds no bleach or fabric softener and says slight shrinkage and shedding are expected after the first wash; that guide is not written for the Bambino, whose own page gives the shedding and shrinkage notes above.
  • Between washes. Revival’s pages say to blot spills immediately and vacuum on low power with a non-rotary vacuum or suction attachment. Ruggable’s page says to blot spills promptly.

If the size you want is bigger than your washer allows, Ruggable’s care page names commercial laundromat washers and Revival’s Washer Guide labels the 8’ x 10’ Commercial for all three rugs here. If you are weighing a larger size, our 10x12 area rug guide covers how that size sits in a room; neither maker’s pages read here list a 10’ x 12’.

Where these numbers come from

Washer sizes, rug builds, care steps and the 8’ x 10’ prices come from Ruggable’s Cambria Ruby page, washing machine guide and care page, and from Revival’s Cardigan, Xylo and Bambino pages and two care posts, all read on 30 October 2026. Revival’s washer sizes come from the Washer Guide pop-up on each product page, opened in a browser; no other maker’s page could be saved. The price gaps and shrinkage in inches are our arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

Are washable rugs worth it for a living room?

They are when the size fits a washer you can use (our reading). On one maker’s washer guide an 8' x 10' needs a 3.8+ cu ft machine for its flatwoven type and 4.5 cu ft for its tufted type, and the five 8' x 10' rugs here run from $299 to $999. Revival’s guide labels all three Revival picks Commercial at 8' x 10' (11.5 to 13.5 cu ft), and a smaller size does not bring them into the Home range: the Xylo 5' x 8' and every 6' x 9' of the three are Commercial too. If your machine is smaller than the size the maker prints, look at a smaller size or a cover-and-pad type from the first maker, or plan on a laundromat for the second (our suggestion).

Can a big washable rug go in a home washer?

It depends on the size and the build. Ruggable’s guide shows no for a tufted 9' x 12' at every machine size it lists, asks 4.2+ cu ft for a flatwoven 9' x 12' and 5.5+ cu ft for a 10' x 14', and its care page says some larger sizes need commercial laundromat washers. Revival’s Washer Guide labels an 8' x 10' Commercial for the Cardigan, Xylo and Bambino (80 to 100 lb, 11.5 to 13.5 cu ft), and a 9' x 12' spot clean or dry clean only for the Cardigan and Xylo; the Bambino 9' x 12' is Commercial at 100 lb (13.5 cu ft).

Do washable rugs need a rug pad?

It depends on the build. Ruggable’s flatwoven rug is sold as a cover on a pad (the pad is never machine washed), and its tufted all-in-one lists “No Pad Needed” with an optional cushioned pad. Revival’s Cardigan, Xylo and Bambino pages say “You do need a rug pad”, and their descriptions say the rug is designed to be pliable for washing.

Are washable rugs good for pets and kids?

The makers label them that way: the Ruggable Cambria Ruby page says “Pet & Kid Friendly”, and Revival’s Cardigan and Xylo pages carry “Kid/Pet Friendly”. The care notes add limits: Revival’s pages say light shedding, fiber breakage and matting may occur in high-traffic areas, and its Bambino page says shedding is typical for most rugs for the first 6 to 9 months.
