Outdoor Dining Sets for 6: Table Size, Clearance and Picks
Outdoor dining sets for 6, $620 to $4,290: how big the table must be for six or eight, the floor to tape for clearance, and six sets compared with drawbacks.

The chairs hit the railing the moment someone pulls out, or the table that “seats six” has everyone’s elbows touching. The usual wrong fix is buying by the number in the name, when a “7-piece” set counts the table as one of its pieces and the tables of the six sets below range from 53⅛ inches long closed (an extendable one, shared by two of the sets) to 90½. So we start with the sizes you can measure on your own patio, then go through six sets priced from $620 to $4,290, with who each one suits and what it gives up.
The short answer
| Set | Best for | Table (L x W) | Price (reference) |
|---|---|---|---|
| IKEA VÄSMAN / ENSHOLM table + 6 chairs | A low price and a table that extends from six toward eight | 53⅛ to 74¾ x 29⅛ in | $620 |
| IKEA NÄMMARÖ table + 6 armchairs | The lowest price with armchairs, on a fixed table | 78¾ x 29½ in | $700 |
| IKEA VÄSMAN / TALLSKÄR table + 6 armchairs | The extendable table with armchairs | 53⅛ to 74¾ x 29⅛ in | $1,100 |
| POLYWOOD Modern Studio Plaza Chair 7-Piece Parsons Dining Set | The shortest fixed table, in HDPE lumber | 64 x 34 in | $1,749 |
| Yardbird Madden Rectangular Dining Set | One table sold with six or eight chairs | 87½ x 40 in | $2,850 (6 chairs); $3,450 (8) |
| Yardbird Winnie 7-Piece Dining Set | Teak and the longest table of the six | 90½ x 41 in | $4,290 |
How big a table seats six, and eight?
Start with the table length, because it decides how many chairs fit along a side. One maker’s table-shape guide lists common table sizes: rectangles 64 to 75 inches long for six, 84 to 97 for eight and 120 and up for ten; squares 59 inches and up for eight; rounds 60 inches and up across for six. For elbow room, the same maker’s buying guide suggests 24 to 30 inches between guests. For the indoor version of the question, see our guide to dining table size.
Divide a table’s length by the chairs along one long side and you get a rough per-chair figure to hold against that 24 to 30 (our arithmetic, and only a rough check, since “between guests” could be measured several ways). With three chairs a side, 64 inches is 21.3 per chair, 74¾ is 24.9, 78¾ is 26.3, 87½ is 29.2 and 90½ is 30.2. Six chairs fit a 64 inch table only as two a side and one at each end (our reading).

Held against that guide’s bands (our reading), the tables of the six sets sort like this:
- 64 inches (POLYWOOD Modern Studio): the bottom of the six band.
- 53⅛ inches closed, 74¾ extended (IKEA VÄSMAN): closed it is under the six band; extended it sits at the top of it.
- 78¾ inches (IKEA NÄMMARÖ): between the six band and the eight band, which skip the lengths between 75 and 84 inches.
- 87½ inches (Yardbird Madden) and 90½ (Yardbird Winnie): inside the eight band, though Madden is sold with six or eight chairs and the Winnie’s chair count needs confirming (see its pick).
That matters if family sometimes brings you to eight. Among outdoor dining sets for 8, Yardbird’s Madden page sells the same 87½ inch table with six chairs for $2,850 or eight for $3,450, which is $600 for two more chairs (our arithmetic), and its separate dining chair lists at $300. On the VÄSMAN table’s own page, the page gives several seat counts (“Seats 4-6.”, “From 4 to 8 people in a flash!” and “a further 6-8 people at this robust table for 4”), so plan the VÄSMAN around six.
How much patio does the whole set take?
The clearance rule is the 36 inches already covered in our patio furniture guide, measured from the table to any wall or structure. The same maker’s buying guide words it a little differently: three feet of clearance on all sides of dining sets, so there is room to pull out chairs and walk around, followed by a formula that subtracts 6 feet of width and 6 feet of depth from the usable space to leave the dining set’s dimensions. It also suggests marking the space with painter’s tape. So there are two readings, and we give both (the steps are our suggestion):
- Tape the table. Use its length and width from the table below.
- Minimum: tape a second rectangle 36 inches outside the table on every side. That is 72 inches added to the length and to the width (our arithmetic). Walls, railings, planters and steps stay outside it.
- Room to walk behind seated guests: add 72 inches to the whole set, chairs included. That is the buying guide’s formula applied to the set size a maker prints (our arithmetic). Three sets print one. The IKEA pages print none, so for those we add 44 inches to the table in each direction before the 72, the amount the three printed sizes add (our reading), which is the table plus 116 inches.
- Compare both sides of your patio. The patio’s shorter side must be at least the rectangle’s shorter side, and its longer side at least the rectangle’s longer side. For the VÄSMAN, use the extended 147 x 101.
Floor to tape for each set
| Set | Table (L x W, in) | Minimum: table + 72 (in) | In feet | Walking room: printed set size + 72 (in) | In feet |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IKEA VÄSMAN (both sets), closed | 53⅛ x 29⅛ | 125 x 101 | 10.4 x 8.4 | Not printed; table + 116: 169 x 145 (our reading) | 14.1 x 12.1 |
| IKEA VÄSMAN (both sets), extended | 74¾ x 29⅛ | 147 x 101 | 12.2 x 8.4 | Not printed; table + 116: 191 x 145 (our reading) | 15.9 x 12.1 |
| IKEA NÄMMARÖ | 78¾ x 29½ | 151 x 102 | 12.6 x 8.5 | Not printed; table + 116: 195 x 145½ (our reading) | 16.2 x 12.1 |
| POLYWOOD Modern Studio | 64 x 34 | 136 x 106 | 11.3 x 8.8 | 178 x 148 (printed 106 x 76 recommended minimum space) | 14.8 x 12.3 |
| Yardbird Madden | 87½ x 40 | 160 x 112 | 13.3 x 9.3 | 203½ x 156 (printed set 131½ x 84, for 6 or 8 chairs) | 17.0 x 13.0 |
| Yardbird Winnie | 90½ x 41 | 163 x 113 | 13.5 x 9.4 | 206½ x 157 (printed set 134½ x 85) | 17.2 x 13.1 |
The three printed sizes are each the table plus 42 to 44 inches in both directions (our arithmetic), which looks like chairs pulled back about 21 to 22 inches on every side (our reading); POLYWOOD notes its figure is based on pictured configurations, and calls it a recommended minimum space rather than a set size. That is why the walking-room rectangle is so much bigger than the minimum one, by about 44 inches in each direction for the Madden and Winnie (our arithmetic). For a patio that cannot take the walking-room rectangle, the minimum one is the least to allow (our reading).
Rectangle, round or extendable?
The tables of all six sets are rectangles (the two VÄSMAN sets share one). One maker’s size guide lists the rectangle as best for larger gatherings or narrow patios, and lists benches among its seating options. In its table-shape guide, a round table has no head of the table and more wiggle room to squeeze in an extra chair, but it cannot be pushed flush against a wall and larger rounds are often too wide for narrow areas; that guide’s example is an eight-person 38-by-96-inch rectangle against an eight-seat 59-inch square: the rectangle is longer, but its width is nearly two feet slimmer. A six-seat round at that guide’s smallest listed size, 60 inches across, needs a 132 x 132 inch taped rectangle, against 136 x 106 for the 64 x 34 inch rectangle: 26 inches less depth, 4 inches more length (our arithmetic). On a patio that is wide but shallow, try the rectangle first (our suggestion).

Extendable. The same maker suggests extendable tables or round styles for seating more guests in a cozier footprint, and, for tight spaces that still host, a leaf table with folding chairs that store when not in use. The one extendable outdoor dining table here is IKEA’s VÄSMAN: it runs from 53⅛ to 74¾ inches long, 21⅝ inches more (our arithmetic), and only the length changes, so the taped floor goes from 125 x 101 to 147 x 101 inches. Its page describes pulling out the metal frame and inserting the included extra leaf. Extended, it is 74¾ inches: inside the six band and below the 84 to 97 inches listed for eight (our reading). Put eight chairs round it, three a side with one at each end, and each long-side chair gets about 24.9 inches, the bottom of the 24 to 30 range (our arithmetic).
Arms. On that buying guide, armrests add comfort and personal space but restrict the ability to add extra seats. IKEA’s TALLSKÄR armchairs are 24 inches wide, so three side by side take 72 inches of a 74¾ inch table (our arithmetic). For a set that has to stretch to eight, armless chairs are the easier fit (our reading).
Six outdoor dining sets compared
| Set | Table L x W x H (in) | Chairs in the set | Chair W x D x H (in) | Frame | Weights printed | Price (reference) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IKEA VÄSMAN / ENSHOLM | 53⅛ to 74¾ x 29⅛ x 29½ | 6; the chair’s page calls it stackable | 18⅞ x 22⅞ x 33½ | Acacia top, powder-coated steel; steel chair with polyester seat and back | Package weights only | $620 |
| IKEA NÄMMARÖ | 78¾ x 29½ x 29½ | 6 armchairs | 22 x 24¼ x 30⅞ | Solid acacia, acrylic stain | Package weights only | $700 |
| IKEA VÄSMAN / TALLSKÄR | 53⅛ to 74¾ x 29⅛ x 29½ | 6 armchairs | 24 x 25⅝ x 36¼ | Acacia top, powder-coated steel; steel armchair with polyethylene wicker | Package weights only | $1,100 |
| POLYWOOD Modern Studio | 64 x 34 | 6; do not stack; tuck under the table | Not printed | HDPE lumber | Set 214.5 lb | $1,749 |
| Yardbird Madden | 87½ x 40 x 30¾ | 6 (or 8); stackable | 22 x 24 x 33 | Powder-coated aluminum | Not printed; 350 lb per seat | $2,850 (6); $3,450 (8) |
| Yardbird Winnie | 90½ x 41 x 30 | “7-Piece”; arm chairs | 22¾ x 24½ x 37½ | Grade A teak | Table 99 lb, chair 16 lb | $4,290 |
On the IKEA pages, the set page for the ENSHOLM set prints a table height of 58⅝ inches, while the table’s own page and the TALLSKÄR set page print 29½, which is what we use; the table width is 29⅛ on the set pages and 28⅞ on the table’s page. POLYWOOD’s page prints a recommended minimum space of 106 x 32 x 76 inches (W x H x D) in place of a table height or chair size.
The six picks, cheapest to dearest
Each price is the one the page showed without a code, for the finish named.
IKEA VÄSMAN / ENSHOLM Table + 6 Chairs
For the lowest price in this list and a table that grows when guests come: 53⅛ inches closed (a taped floor of 125 x 101 inches, our arithmetic) and 74¾ extended. The table top is solid acacia with an acrylic stain on a powder-coated steel frame, and the green ENSHOLM chairs are steel with a polyester seat and back, 18⅞ inches wide and 33½ high. The chair’s page calls it lightweight and stackable; at 18⅞ inches wide against a 17¾ inch seat it has no arms (our reading).
Drawbacks: The table's own page gives several seat counts, 4-6 and 4 to 8 among them, so eight is a squeeze (our reading). The ENSHOLM chair page prints a 14⅛ inch seat depth, and the care text on the table's page asks you to re-stain the wood regularly, for example once or twice a year. IKEA prints package weights only.
IKEA NÄMMARÖ Table + 6 Armchairs
For armchairs and a longer table at the lowest price: 78¾ inches is 3¾ inches past the top of the maker’s six band (our arithmetic), and six armchairs take 66 inches with three a side (about 26.3 inches a chair). The armchair seat is 19⅝ inches wide and deep and 16½ high. The taped floor is 151 x 102 inches (our arithmetic), and IKEA sells a cover for the set separately.
Drawbacks: Everything is acacia wood, and the care text asks you to re-stain it regularly, for example once or twice a year, to store it indoors if possible and otherwise to cover it. The table is fixed at 78¾ inches, between the maker's six and eight bands (our reading), so it does not stretch. The set page prints no chair size; the 22 x 24¼ x 30⅞ inch figure is from the armchair's own page.
IKEA VÄSMAN / TALLSKÄR Table + 6 Armchairs
For the extendable table with armchairs: the TALLSKÄR armchairs are 24 x 25⅝ x 36¼ inches, in powder-coated steel with a polyethylene wicker part, against the 18⅞ inch armless ENSHOLM chairs. The table is the same acacia-and-steel VÄSMAN, 53⅛ to 74¾ inches long, and the taped floor is 125 x 101 inches closed and 147 x 101 extended (our arithmetic).
Drawbacks: It costs about $480 more than the ENSHOLM set for the same table (our arithmetic). The armchairs are 24 inches wide, so three along the extended table take 72 of its 74¾ inches; this is not the set to stretch to eight. The table top is acacia wood that its page asks you to re-stain regularly, as on the other IKEA tables, and only package weights are printed.
POLYWOOD Modern Studio Plaza Chair 7-Piece Parsons Dining Set
For a tight floor on a fixed table, and for the weather-proof frame: the page lists a 34 x 64 inch Parsons table with six chairs that tuck under it, and says it is designed with smaller spaces in mind. The taped floor is 136 x 106 inches (our arithmetic). The lumber is HDPE that is not prone to splinter, crack, chip, peel or rot, the tabletop is slatted with a 1.625 inch umbrella hole and thin drainage gaps, and the page says it withstands storms and strong winds. At 214.5 lb for the set it is heavy, which helps on a windy deck (our reading).
Drawbacks: At 64 inches the table is the bottom of the maker's six band, so six chairs mean two a side and one at each end (our reading). The chairs do not stack, per a POLYWOOD reply on the product page. Other colors run $1,849 to $2,595. Freight delivery does not include removing the packaging, and the white-glove upgrade that adds assembly costs extra.
Yardbird Madden Rectangular Dining Set
For one table that can go from six to eight: the page offers 6 people or 8 people, and the 8-chair option adds $600 (our arithmetic), the table staying 87½ inches long, in the eight band (our reading). The frames are rust-resistant charcoal gray powder-coated aluminum, the chairs stack, and the Sunbrella cushions come in Granite or Dove. The spec sheet shows the same 131½ x 84 inch set for both the 7-piece and 9-piece versions, so the footprint does not grow with two extra chairs (as printed). A Chairs and One Bench option is also listed, $3,150 for eight.
Drawbacks: Its taped floor, 160 x 112 inches (our arithmetic), is the second largest of the six. The page prints no weight for the table or chairs, and does not say whether the chair has arms. Its text says the table comfortably accommodates up to 9 people while the options offer 6 or 8 people, so check the chair count in the cart.
Yardbird Winnie 7-Piece Dining Set
For teak and a table that stays put: it is the longest table here at 90½ inches, in the eight band (our reading), with a 99 lb table and 16 lb chairs of 22¾ x 24½ x 37½ inches that the page’s description calls arm chairs, with Sunbrella cushions. The frame is Grade A teak, and the page gives an estimated 350 lb capacity per seat. The 9-Piece lists at $5,145, $855 more (our arithmetic), on the same 134½ x 85 inch printed footprint.
Drawbacks: The dearest of the six, and the largest floor to tape: 163 x 113 inches (our arithmetic). The page's detail text says the 7-Piece includes eight dining chairs, while a 7-piece count implies a table and six (our reading), so confirm the chair count with Yardbird before ordering. Teak turns gray unless you maintain it; the page says a little annual maintenance keeps the honey color.
Which set fits your patio?
A narrow or shallow patio. Start with the minimum rectangles and compare both sides. Shorter sides run from 8.4 feet (IKEA VÄSMAN) to 9.4 (Winnie), with the POLYWOOD Modern Studio at 8.8; longer sides run from 10.4 feet (VÄSMAN closed, 12.2 extended) to 13.5 (Winnie). If your patio is under about 8.4 feet on its shorter side, none of the six sets fits with 36 inches round the table, and our small patio ideas cover what to do instead. For walking room behind chairs, the IKEA VÄSMAN needs about 14.1 x 12.1 feet closed or 15.9 x 12.1 extended and the NÄMMARÖ 16.2 x 12.1 (our reading), the POLYWOOD 14.8 x 12.3, the Madden 17.0 x 13.0 and the Winnie 17.2 x 13.1 (our arithmetic).
Six most nights and eight now and then. The IKEA VÄSMAN, extended, or the Yardbird Madden with eight chairs. The Madden’s table is in the eight band and the VÄSMAN’s is not (our reading), while the VÄSMAN is the lower price.
Wet, windy or left outside. Of the six set pages, only POLYWOOD’s says the set withstands storms and strong winds. The NÄMMARÖ and VÄSMAN table pages ask you to re-stain the acacia once or twice a year, and on Yardbird’s general cushion care page, wet cushions typically need 1-3 days in the sun to dry, and where temperatures fall below freezing they should be stored indoors for winter. The materials are covered in our patio furniture guide, linked above. This guide covers dining tables only; for lounge seating, see our outdoor conversation sets.
Lowest price. The IKEA VÄSMAN / ENSHOLM at $620 is the cheapest of the six, and the NÄMMARÖ at $700 is the cheapest with armchairs.
Where these numbers come from
Table, chair and set sizes, weights and prices (shown without a code) come from the IKEA, POLYWOOD and Yardbird product pages and Yardbird spec sheets, read on 29 October 2026; the seat-count bands, the 24 to 30 inch spacing and the three-foot clearance come from three of POLYWOOD’s buying guides. Taped footprints, per-chair spacing and price differences are our arithmetic from those figures.
Frequently asked questions
How big should an outdoor dining table be for 6 people?
One maker's table-shape guide lists rectangles 64 to 75 inches long for six, squares from 59 inches (listed for eight) and rounds from 60 inches across for six. Of the six sets here, table length runs from 53⅛ inches closed (74¾ extended) to 90½: IKEA VÄSMAN 53⅛ to 74¾, POLYWOOD Modern Studio 64, IKEA NÄMMARÖ 78¾, Yardbird Madden 87½ and Winnie 90½. That maker's buying guide suggests 24 to 30 inches between guests.
How big a table do you need for an outdoor dining set for 8?
On that maker's guide, a rectangle 84 to 97 inches long for eight, or a 59 inch square. Two sets here have tables in that band: Yardbird Madden at 87½ inches, which Yardbird sells with six or eight chairs ($2,850 or $3,450 as priced), and Yardbird Winnie at 90½ inches, whose 7-Piece page text says eight chairs although its piece count implies six (our reading). The IKEA VÄSMAN extends to 74¾ inches, and its own page gives several seat counts, including “Seats 4-6” and “From 4 to 8”.
How much space does an outdoor dining set for 6 need?
Two readings, both from one maker's guides. Minimum: the table plus 36 inches on every side, which is 72 inches added to the length and to the width (our arithmetic): 125 x 101 inches for the IKEA VÄSMAN closed up to 163 x 113 for Yardbird's Winnie. To walk behind seated guests, that maker's buying-guide formula adds three feet around the whole set including chairs, so the printed set size plus 72 inches (our arithmetic): 203½ x 156 for Madden, 206½ x 157 for Winnie and 178 x 148 for POLYWOOD's minimum-space figure. Compare both sides of your patio with the rectangle, and tape it first (our suggestion).
Is an extendable outdoor dining table better than a fixed one?
It depends on how often you reach eight. The IKEA VÄSMAN goes from 53⅛ to 74¾ inches long and only the length changes (our arithmetic), but its extended length is below the 84 to 97 inches one maker lists for eight. A fixed table sized for eight, like Yardbird's Madden at 87½ inches, keeps that footprint every day.
