Small Living Room Side Tables: Heights, Sizes and Picks

Which side table fits a small living room: measure sofa arm height and the gap beside it, then compare six picks from $45.00 to $316 on printed height and size.

A grey upholstered sofa in a living room with a small round dark wood side table beside its arm, holding a lamp and a plant

Your side table stands above the sofa arm so setting down a glass means reaching up, or it juts out into the one walkway the room has. The usual fix is to buy whatever is labelled “small”, but that word says nothing about height or footprint. Below, you measure the arm and the gap first, then compare six tables from $45.00 to $316, each with its printed height and footprint and who it suits.

The short answer

Pick Best for Height x footprint Price (reference)
Walker Edison Marble-Like Sofa Side Table (C-shaped) The narrowest gap, slides under the sofa 23.62 H x 17.72 x 11.81 in $45.00
Burrow Carta Side Table A low sofa arm 17 H x 20 x 20 in $183
Nathan James Lula Nesting Round End Table Set Two tables that can be pulled apart 22 H x 18 x 18 in (one set of dimensions printed) $200 for two
Nathan James River 2-Tier Side Table A lower shelf for books or a basket 22.3 H x 20 x 20 in $210
Burrow Kettle Side Table A round top on a small floor circle 21 H x 15 in across $231
Blu Dot Note Side Table A slim stem that slides in beside a sofa 22 H x 16 x 16 in $316

How tall should a side table be next to your sofa?

Measure from the floor to the top of the sofa arm, the spot where you would set a glass (our suggestion). The tables here are judged against that number, with two guides to set the range. One retailer’s end table guide says the table should be at or slightly below the arm, ideally within 2 inches, and warns that a table taller than the arm makes you reach up to set things down. One furniture seller’s size guide says within 2 inches of the arm, so a 23 inch arm suits a 21 to 25 inch table.

For an arm of 22 inches, that is a table of 20 to 22 on the first reading and 20 to 24 on the second (our arithmetic). If you are unsure, use the at-or-below column in the table at the end, which always sits inside the other one.

If the arm is low, go shorter: the seller’s guide calls tables under 22 inches short and uses them with low-profile sofas, deep couches and futons, and the retailer’s guide gives 18 to 22 inches for a low sofa. If the sofa has no arms, the retailer’s guide gives 24 to 26 inches from the floor, and the seller’s guide uses tables over 26 inches with tall, oversized sofas. The tables below range from 17 to 23.62 inches: the Burrow Carta at 17 suits a low arm, and the other five suit arms from about 19 to 25.62 inches (our arithmetic). If you meant the table in front of the sofa, that has its own numbers in our guide to coffee table height.

How much floor does it need in a small room?

Three limits matter beside a sofa. The seller’s guide leaves 1 to 3 inches between the sofa and the table so things stay in reach and the two do not rub. The retailer’s guide says the table should not be deeper than the sofa or chair beside it, because a deeper one can look out of proportion and block foot traffic. And on the open side, one retailer’s sofa size guide says to leave 30 to 36 inches for main walkways. That is a sofa guide and not a rule for side tables, but it is the one clearance figure we found for a path.

Put them together (our arithmetic): take the gap between the end of the sofa and the wall or the next piece, subtract the table’s width and 1 to 3 inches of spacing, and see what is left for walking. A 48 inch gap with a 16 inch table leaves 29 to 31 inches. The same gap with the 11.81 inch C-shaped top leaves 33.19 to 35.19. Working the other way, a path that must stay 30 to 36 inches wide needs 51 to 59 inches beside a 20 inch table, or 42.81 to 50.81 beside the C-shaped. If the gap is a dead-end nook and not a path, the 30 to 36 inch figure does not apply: the table’s width plus 1 to 3 inches has to fit, so a 20 inch nook takes a table up to 17 to 19 inches wide. Size also limits what the top can hold: the seller’s guide says square tables smaller than 18 inches have very little surface area and do not hold much, and it calls 12 to 16 inch wide tables a fit for compact spaces. That remark is about square tops, so test any of the six against the base of your lamp (our suggestion).

Which shape works in a tight space?

  • C-shaped. The Walker Edison C table is listed as sliding into the underside of a couch, bed or chair, which puts part of its footprint under the sofa (our reading). It prints no base height, so measure the gap under your sofa.
  • Nesting set. The retailer’s guide says nesting tables let you use the taller table normally and pull out the smaller ones when entertaining. The Nathan James Lula set prints one size for the set, and does not say whether the two tables differ in size, so ask before you count on them nesting (our suggestion).
  • Round. One retailer’s coffee table guide calls round coffee tables a good shape for smaller spaces because they leave more room to walk around and have no sharp corners; the Kettle is a round side table with a top 15 inches across.
  • Narrow with a shelf. The River has a woven faux seagrass lower shelf for “extra room for styling and storage” on a 20 by 20 inch floor patch.
  • Slim stem. The Blu Dot Note is described as having a slim, cantilevered silhouette that easily slides in next to sofas or lounge chairs, on a 16 inch footprint.

The picks

From the cheapest to the most expensive. The picks are judged on the numbers above: height against your arm, footprint against your gap.

Walker Edison Marble-Like Sofa Side Table (C-shaped)

$45.00 (white)Price for reference only23.62 H x 17.72 x 11.81 in · steel and MDF · 50 lbView it on the brand's site →

For the narrowest gap and the lowest price: it is $138 cheaper than the next pick (our arithmetic). The page calls it a narrow side table with a C-shaped design that slides under a couch, bed or chair, holds magazines, snacks or drinks, and weighs 4.63 lb. At 23.62 inches it suits arms of about 21.6 to 25.6 inches (our arithmetic), and it is the tallest of the six.

Drawbacks: The top is 11.81 inches wide, the narrowest of the six, so a lamp and a glass together will be tight (our reading). The page prints a 50 lb limit and no base height, so measure the gap under your sofa first. The top is MDF.

Burrow Carta Side Table

$183 (oak or walnut, either leg)Price for reference only17 H x 20 x 20 in · MDF with ash veneer, steel legsView it on the brand's site →

For a low sofa arm of about 15 to 19 inches (our arithmetic). The page lists a removable tray top, a choice of hairpin or straight legs, and a rectangle tray of 20 x 10 x 1 inches with 2.5 inches of storage depth. The floor patch is a 20 inch square, so it needs a gap with room to spare.

Drawbacks: At 17 inches it is the shortest of the six, so it suits only low arms of about 15 to 19 inches (our arithmetic). It has the largest footprint here, tied with the River at 20 by 20. No weight capacity is printed, and the page prints one 17 inch height without saying whether it covers both leg styles.

Nathan James Lula Nesting Round End Table Set

$200 (set of 2, black and nutmeg)Price for reference only22 H x 18 x 18 in as printed for the set · 50 lb per topView it on the brand's site →

For a room where one table sits by the sofa and a second comes out for guests. The page lists a 50 lb weight limit per top, floor protectors, and a price the page works out to $99.99 per table. At 22 inches it suits arms of 20 to 24.

Drawbacks: The page prints one set of dimensions, 18 x 18 x 22 inches, and does not say whether the two tables differ in size, so ask before you count on them nesting (our suggestion). The tops are paper laminate over particleboard. Two tables need more floor when both are out (our reading).

Nathan James River 2-Tier Side Table

$210 (light brown, single)Price for reference only22.3 H x 20 x 20 in · solid wood legs, seagrass shelfView it on the brand's site →

For a sofa end that needs somewhere to put books, a basket or a blanket as well as a drink. The page describes a two-tier silhouette with a woven faux seagrass bottom shelf, solid wood legs and a top of engineered wood veneer. At 22.3 inches it suits arms of about 20.3 to 24.3 (our arithmetic).

Drawbacks: The floor patch is 20 by 20 inches, the same as the Carta and the largest here. The page prints no weight capacity. The shelf is faux seagrass, and the page says each piece varies because of the natural wood.

Burrow Kettle Side Table

$231 (wood top)Price for reference only21 H x 15 in across · spun steel base, solid ash topView it on the brand's site →

For a tight corner where a round top on a 15 inch circle is easier to walk around than a square one. It has the smallest floor patch of the six, about 177 square inches against about 209 for the C-shaped (our arithmetic), and at 21 inches it suits arms of 19 to 23.

Drawbacks: No weight capacity is printed. The page says it can be flipped on either end, with the taller base drum as a pedestal or on top, and prints only the 21 inch height, so ask which end is up before you count on that height (our suggestion). The Carrara marble top costs more, at $243.

Blu Dot Note Side Table

$316 (black)Price for reference only22 H x 16 x 16 in · powder-coated steel · 31 lbView it on the brand's site →

For a sofa end where you want a slim stem and a small round top. The page calls it a slim spine of powder-coated steel holding a cantilevered round top and base, with a minimal footprint and rubber glides to protect floors. It is offered in nine colours. At 22 inches it suits arms of 20 to 24 (our arithmetic).

Drawbacks: It is the most expensive of the six and the heavier of the two pages here that print a weight: 31 lb, against 4.63 lb for the C-shaped. The page prints no weight capacity. Blu Dot also sells a Note Large and a Note Tall, which are different sizes.

Which side table fits your room?

Start with the arm. Find your arm height in the table (our arithmetic from each table’s printed height). The middle column is the seller’s within-2-inches reading, the last is the retailer’s at-or-below reading, where the arm is at the table’s height or up to 2 inches above it. If an arm height sits on a boundary, either row works.

Arm height (inches) Within 2 in either way At or below the arm
Under 15 none of the six none of the six
15 to 17 Carta none of the six (the Carta at 17 is the closest, up to 2 in above the arm)
17 to 19 Carta Carta
19 to 20 Kettle none of the six (the Kettle at 21 is the closest, up to 2 in above the arm)
20 to 20.3 Kettle, Lula, Note none of the six (the Kettle at 21 is the closest, up to 2 in above the arm)
20.3 to 21 Kettle, Lula, Note, River none of the six (the Kettle at 21 is the closest, up to 2 in above the arm)
21 to 21.6 Kettle, Lula, Note, River Kettle
21.6 to 22 Kettle, Lula, Note, River, C-shaped Kettle
22 to 22.3 Kettle, Lula, Note, River, C-shaped Kettle, Lula, Note
22.3 to 23 Kettle, Lula, Note, River, C-shaped Kettle, Lula, Note, River
23 to 23.6 Lula, Note, River, C-shaped Lula, Note, River
23.6 to 24 Lula, Note, River, C-shaped Lula, Note, River, C-shaped
24 to 24.3 River, C-shaped River, C-shaped
24.3 to 25.6 C-shaped C-shaped
Over 25.6 none of the six none of the six

Then the gap. A dead-end nook needs the table’s width plus 1 to 3 inches of spacing (our arithmetic). The nook figures use the full 3 inches, the roomiest end: a nook of at least about 15 inches takes the C-shaped at its 11.81 side, 18 the Kettle, 19 the Note, 21 the Lula and 23 the River or Carta. A nook under 12.81 inches, the 11.81 plus the 1 inch minimum, takes none of the six. A path beside the sofa needs 30 to 36 inches of walkway on top of that. The path figures use the other end, the 30 inch walkway minimum and 1 inch of spacing, so they are the least gap that can work: 42.81 inches for the C-shaped, 46 for the Kettle, 47 for the Note, 49 for the Lula and 51 for the River or Carta. Under 42.81 inches, none of the six leaves a 30 inch path, so put the table at the other end of the sofa (our suggestion).

Then what it holds. A drink and a phone: any of them. A lamp: the 18 to 20 inch tops (Lula, River, Carta) give the most room, and the Note’s page says it supports lamps, books and beverages; put the lamp base on the table before you buy (our suggestion). Books or a basket: the River’s shelf. A second surface for guests: the Lula set. For more on lamp placement and room layout, see our guide to living room decor ideas. If you are also choosing the sofa, see our two seat sofa guide, and the furniture buying guide covers the rest of the room.

Where these numbers come from

Dimensions, materials, weight limits and prices (shown without a code) come from each maker’s product page, read on 26 October 2026: Walker Edison, Burrow, Nathan James and Blu Dot. Height, spacing and walkway guidance comes from the retailer and furniture seller guides linked above. Arm-height ranges, gap sums and footprints are our arithmetic from those figures.

Frequently asked questions

How tall should a side table be next to a sofa?

Near the height of the sofa arm. One retailer's end table guide says at or slightly below the arm, ideally within 2 inches, and one furniture seller's size guide says the top should be within 2 inches of the arm. The same seller's guide calls tables under 22 inches short and uses them with low-profile sofas. Of the six here, the printed heights run from 17 inches (Burrow Carta) to 23.62 (Walker Edison C-shaped).

What size side table fits a narrow gap beside the sofa?

Subtract the table's width and 1 to 3 inches of spacing from the gap, and check what is left against the 30 to 36 inches one retailer's sofa guide gives for main walkways (our arithmetic). The narrowest printed tops of the six are the Walker Edison C-shaped at 11.81 inches wide, the Burrow Kettle at 15 across and the Blu Dot Note at 16.

Should a side table be as deep as the sofa?

It should not be deeper. One retailer's guide says the ideal depth equals the depth of the sofa or chair beside it and warns that a deeper table can look out of proportion and block foot traffic. Measure from the back of the sofa to the front edge of the seat for the limit.

Can a side table slide under a sofa?

Only the C-shaped listing says so: the Walker Edison page says the C table slides into the underside of the couch, bed or chair. It prints no base height, so measure the gap under your sofa before you order (our suggestion).
