Two Seat Sofa Picks: Length, Seat Depth and Doorway Fit
Which two seat sofa to buy: six picks priced $1,379 to $2,595, compared on overall length, seat depth, seat room, doorway fit and what each one gives up.

Two people sit down and their elbows touch, or the sofa turns out longer than the wall, or the box stops at the stairwell. The usual wrong fix is buying by the word “loveseat” or “two seater”: the six two-seaters below print lengths from 60 to 80 inches and seat depths from 19 to 27 inches, and where a page prints enough to work it out, each person gets between about 24 and 33 inches of seat (our arithmetic for two of them). So we start with the numbers to measure at home, then go through six picks priced from $1,379 to $2,595, with who each one suits and what it gives up.
The short answer
| Pick | Best for | Length x depth | Price (reference) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burrow Nomad Loveseat | The shortest of the six at 60 inches long, with a 22 inch seat | 60 x 35 in | $1,379 |
| Sabai Essential Loveseat | A short wall and a low 16 inch seat | 62 x 34 in | $1,395 |
| Burrow Union 2-Seat Sofa | Lounging: the deepest seat of the six, 27 inches | 70 x 39 in | $1,949 |
| Burrow Ember Pro 2-Seat Sofa (80 in) | A 19 inch seat, 3 inches higher than the Essential’s, and 23.5 deep | 80 x 34 in | $2,239 |
| Albany Park Kova Box Modular 2-Piece Sofa | Two printed 33 inch seats between 7 inch arms | 80 x 40 in | $2,299 |
| Sabai Bacana Loveseat | Thin 3.5 inch arms and a 30.25 inch deep body | 68.25 x 30.25 in | $2,595 |
How long should a two seat sofa be?
Start with the wall. Of the six here, overall length runs from 60 inches (Nomad) through 62 (Essential), 68.25 (Bacana) and 70 (Union) to 80 for both the Ember and the Kova, and depth from 30.25 inches (Bacana) to 40 (Kova). Tape the length and depth on the floor before you order (our suggestion). For the general loveseat and apartment sofa ranges and how to measure a couch, see our guide to standard couch size.
Length alone cannot tell you how much seat you get, because the arms take some of it. Where a page prints arm thickness or seat width, we can work out the rest (our arithmetic). The Kova prints a 33 inch seat width and 7 inch arms, and 80 inches less two 7 inch arms leaves 66, which is two 33 inch seats. The Essential’s 62 inches less two 7 inch arms leaves 48, so about 24 inches per person. The Bacana’s 68.25 inches less two 3.5 inch arms leaves 61.25, about 30.6 per person. So the Bacana is 6.25 inches longer than the Essential and has 13.25 inches more seat between its arms. That assumes each printed arm thickness is the length the arm takes from the overall figure (our reading). The Nomad, Union and Ember pages print neither arm thickness nor seat width, so ask the maker before you order (our suggestion).
Seat depth and height: who is sitting on it?
One maker’s comfort guide puts seat depth in three bands: 19 to 20 inches for sitting upright with your feet on the floor, especially if you are under 5 feet 4 inches; 21 to 23 for most sitting and light lounging; and 24 and up for curling up, tucking your legs or reclining with a book. Its seat-height bands are 15 to 16 inches (low, paired with deep seats), 17 to 19 (the range it calls the most universally comfortable) and 19 and up (easier to get in and out of), and as a general rule, the deeper the seat, the lower the seat height needs to be.
Of the six here, seat depth runs from 19 inches (Bacana) through 22 (Nomad and Essential) and 23.5 (Ember) to 25 (Kova, measured with the back cushion; 33 without it) and 27 (Union). Seat height runs from 16 (Essential) through 17 (Nomad), 17.125 (Union) and 18 (Bacana) to 19 (Ember and Kova). Only the Kova page says how its depth is measured, so treat depths from different makers as approximate (our reading). On that guide’s bands (our reading): the Bacana is the one upright-sitter depth, the Union and Kova are in the curl-up band, and the Ember’s 23.5 sits just under it. The Essential is the lowest seat, in the guide’s low band, while the 19 inch Ember and Kova are in the band that guide calls easier to get in and out of, so they are the ones to try if standing up from a sofa is the problem (our reading).

Will it fit through your door?
Measure the box, not the sofa, for the five that ship boxed; the Ember is the exception below. On one maker’s delivery guide, the steps are to open each door as wide as it goes and measure the frame at its narrowest point, and a doorway wider than the box’s height or width clears it. Walk the whole path from where the truck parks, because a box that clears the front door may not clear an inner door. Measure alcoves, foyers and sharp turns, since a box cannot bend. On stairs, note the railing height and the landings where it has to rotate, and for an elevator the door and interior sizes and the weight limit. Leave 1 to 2 inches of spare room at every point on that guide’s advice. Our furniture buying guide covers the route in more detail.
That maker prints a box size on each product page, and the five boxed picks here do not: the Nomad, Union, Kova, Essential and Bacana pages show no box or package size. For scale, that maker’s 72 inch Aria sofa lists a single box of 74 x 44 x 30 inches, 2 inches longer and 2 deeper than the sofa itself (our arithmetic). What the pages do say: the Nomad and Union pages describe a normal shipping box, and Burrow’s delivery page says its modular design fits its furniture into standard shipping boxes; the Kova arrives in sections, so the boxes fit through doorways and up stairs on the maker’s delivery page. The Essential and Bacana pages list shipping in recycled packaging via FedEx Ground. The Nomad, Union, Kova, Essential and Bacana pages each describe assembly at home, tool-free for the Nomad and Kova. The Ember page says it is delivered via white glove service, fully assembled, with no boxes, so for the Ember measure the sofa itself, 80 x 34 x 32 inches, against each door and turn. For the other five, ask the maker for its piece sizes before you order (our suggestion).

The picks
From the cheapest to the most expensive. A two seat couch, loveseat or apartment sofa with two seats is the same size question, and these six are sold as two-seaters.
Burrow Nomad Loveseat
For a short wall, a studio or a nook: at 60 inches it is the shortest of the six, 2 inches shorter than the Essential (our arithmetic). The page lists a 24 inch arm height and 7 inch legs, offers a Block or Slope arm style and describes tool-free assembly, built-in USB charging and a modular design that moves easily.
Drawbacks: The page prints no seat width or arm thickness, so what each person gets between the arms is not known (our reading); it prints one set of dimensions without saying whether they are for the Block or the Slope arm, and no box size. The 22 inch seat is mid-depth of the six: not the one for curling up.
Sabai Essential Loveseat
For a short wall where you still want a 22 inch deep seat and 25.5 inch arms (printed arm height, level with the top of the back frame; our reading). The frame is FSC-certified plywood with CertiPUR-US certified foam, the page describes it as compact, and it is assembled with universal tools after shipping by FedEx Ground in recycled packaging.
Drawbacks: At 16 inches it has the lowest seat of the six, which can be harder to stand up from. Its 7 inch arms leave about 24 inches of seat per person (our arithmetic), the least of the three where that can be worked out. Metal or cylinder legs cost $80 more (our arithmetic), and the page prints no box size.
Burrow Union 2-Seat Sofa
For lounging and sprawling: the deepest seat of the six at 27 inches on a 17.125 inch seat height, in a 70 inch length. The page calls it Burrow’s most spacious modular sofa, with deep, sink-in seating, and says its modular pieces assemble with no extra hardware.
Drawbacks: At 39 inches deep it takes the most floor of the six after the Kova, and its 27 inch seat is well into the 24 and up band that one comfort guide gives for curling up, so it suits lounging more than upright sitting (our reading). The page prints no seat width, arm thickness or box size.
Burrow Ember Pro 2-Seat Sofa (80 in)
For a 19 inch seat, in the height band one comfort guide calls easier to get in and out of, on a 34 inch deep body that takes less floor than the Union or Kova (our arithmetic). Its 23.5 inch seat depth is just over the 21 to 23 inch band and just under the 24 inches one comfort guide gives for curling up (our reading), and the page lists white glove delivery.
Drawbacks: At 80 inches it needs as long a wall as the Kova. The page calls the seats extra-wide but prints no seat width or arm thickness, so the room per person is not known (our reading). It arrives assembled, so the sofa itself has to clear every door and turn.
Albany Park Kova Box Modular 2-Piece Sofa
For the surest answer to how much seat each person gets: the page prints a 33 inch seat width and 7 inch arms, so two people get 33 inches each. The two pieces connect with concealed clips and assemble tool-free, and the page describes it as two deep seats, with a 25 inch seat depth with the back cushion and 33 without. The 24 inch overall height is the back height without the back cushion; with it the back is 37 inches (our reading).
Drawbacks: At 40 inches deep it takes the most floor of the six, and at 80 inches long it needs one of the longest walls. Chenille, bouclé and brushed canvas covers cost $2,460 and Sunbrella linen $2,920. The page prints no piece or box sizes.
Sabai Bacana Loveseat
For seat room on a shallow body: 3.5 inch arms leave about 61 of its 68.25 inches for seats, 30.6 per person (our arithmetic), in a body only 30.25 inches deep, the shallowest of the six. The frame is FSC-certified solid wood with a low-VOC finish, and it is assembled with universal tools. Its 19 inch seat depth is the band one comfort guide gives for sitting upright, especially under 5 feet 4 inches.
Drawbacks: The 19 inch seat is the shallowest of the six, so it is not the one for curling up, and its 22.75 inch arms are the lowest of the four pages that print an arm height. It costs the most of the six, and the page prints no box size.
Which two seat sofa fits your room?

Wall length, in inches (a sofa can be no longer than the wall, so these are minimums; our reading).
- Under 60: none of the six fits.
- 60 to under 62: the Nomad only.
- 62 to under 68.25: the Nomad or the Essential. Both have a 22 inch deep seat, so choose by seat height: 17 for the Nomad, 16 for the Essential.
- 68.25 to under 70: those two, plus the Bacana at 68.25.
- 70 to under 80: add the Union at 70.
- 80 and over: all six, adding the Ember and the Kova at 80.
Two adults who want room each. Pick by the printed seat room: the Kova at 33 inches each in 80 inches, or the Bacana at about 30.6 each in 68.25 (our arithmetic). If you can spare only 62 inches, the Essential gives about 24 each.
Shorter sitters or upright sitting. The Bacana’s 19 inch seat is the one in the 19 to 20 inch band, and the Nomad and Essential at 22 are in the 21 to 23 band (our reading). Avoid the Union at 27 unless you want to curl up.
Lounging and long evenings. The Union at 27 inches and the Kova at 25 with its back cushion are in the deep band; the Kova gives 33 without the cushion.
A tight stairwell or hall. Measure the narrowest point on the route. For the Ember, which arrives assembled with no boxes, compare it with the sofa itself, 80 x 34 x 32 inches. For the Nomad, Union, Kova, Essential and Bacana, which ship boxed, no page prints a box size, so ask the maker for each piece before you order (our suggestion). A side table beside it is a separate measurement: see our small living room side tables.
Where these numbers come from
Dimensions, seat measurements and prices (shown without a code) come from each maker’s product page, read on 26 October 2026: Burrow for the Nomad, Union and Ember, Albany Park for the Kova and Sabai for the Essential and Bacana. The seat depth and height bands come from one maker’s comfort guide and the doorway steps from another maker’s delivery guide. Seat room per person on the Essential and Bacana, and every difference between lengths, is our arithmetic from those figures.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a two seat sofa?
Of the six here, overall length runs from 60 to 80 inches: Burrow Nomad 60, Sabai Essential 62, Sabai Bacana 68.25, Burrow Union 70, and Burrow Ember and Albany Park Kova 80. Depth runs from 30.25 inches (Bacana) to 40 (Kova). Measure your wall and tape the length and depth on the floor (our suggestion).
How wide should a two seat couch be for two people?
Look at the seat between the arms, not the overall length. The Kova page prints a 33 inch seat width, which matches 80 inches less two 7 inch arms, split in two (our arithmetic). On the same arithmetic the Essential leaves about 24 inches per person and the Bacana about 30.6. The Nomad, Union and Ember pages print neither seat width nor arm thickness.
How deep should a two seat sofa seat be?
On one maker's comfort guide, 19 to 20 inches suits sitting upright with feet on the floor, especially under 5 feet 4 inches, 21 to 23 suits most sitting and light lounging, and 24 and up suits curling up or reclining. Of the six here, seat depth runs from 19 (Bacana) to 27 inches (Union).
Will a two seat couch fit through my door?
Measure the doorframe at its narrowest point with the door open and compare it with the box, not the sofa (except the Ember, below): on one maker's delivery guide, a doorway wider than the box's height or width clears it, with 1 to 2 inches to spare. None of the five boxed picks prints a box size, so ask the maker for each piece before you order (our suggestion); the Ember arrives assembled with no boxes, so measure the sofa itself, 80 x 34 x 32 inches.
