Sleeper Sofa Mattress: Replacement Sizes, Thickness, Picks

Pick a replacement sleeper sofa mattress that folds closed: sleeper sizes, thickness limits, foam vs coil vs air, five queen picks with prices, and a topper.

A guest rolls over and the support bar finds their back through a thin, flattened pull-out mattress. Ordering the replacement by the word “queen” is where it goes wrong: the five replacements priced below have a queen that is 72 inches long, against the approximate 60 x 80 inches a furniture retailer’s sofa size chart gives for an open queen sleeper, and the four that print a thickness run 4.5 to 5 inches (the Air Dream deflated), because the mattress has to fold inside the sofa. So here is how to measure the mattress you have, how thick a new one can be, which type suits whom, then five queen replacements with a price, who each suits and a drawback, plus a topper as the cheaper route.

The short answer

Pick Type and thickness Best for Price (reference, queen)
Milliard 4.5 Inch Memory Foam Sofa Bed Mattress Memory foam over base foam, 4.5 in The lowest price, thickness inside the usual range $225
Sofa Bed Mattress (The Lilian) Memory foam or latex, thickness not printed Exact sizes, a choice of feel $614
Leggett & Platt ComforCOOL II 5” Gel foam over coils, 5 in Frequent guests, a mechanism the page names $700
Hospitality Bed 5” Innerspring Innerspring, about 5 in A classic coil feel $680
Air Dream Replacement Mattress Air over coils, 5 in deflated, 11 in inflated Occasional guests who want adjustable firmness $800

Measure what you have: sleeper sizes are not bed sizes

The size on the box is a name; the number that matters is the one you measure. One maker’s FAQ says sofa bed mattresses do not always follow standard bedroom-mattress dimensions even when labelled twin, full or queen, and tells you to measure the mattress you are replacing, width, length and thickness edge to edge, and to choose the matching dimensions instead of going by the size name. Sellers’ own charts show the gap:

Width x length, inches Twin Full Queen
Leggett & Platt sleeper pages (Wallace Flynn Collective) 36 x 72 52 x 72 60 x 72
Sofa Bed Mattress, standard sizes 38 x 72 54 x 72 60 x 72
Milliard 4.5 in (the page prints length first) 38 x 75 52 x 73 58 x 72
A furniture retailer’s sofa size chart, open sleeper sofa beds (approximate) 38 x 75 54 x 75 60 x 80

On those three sellers’ pages a queen sleeper mattress is 72 inches long and 58 to 60 inches wide, so it is 8 inches shorter than a bed-size queen of 80 (our arithmetic); our bed sizes chart has the regular sizes to compare. The Leggett & Platt pages add a rule for the width: subtract 8 inches from the mechanism’s mounting width to get the mattress width, so a 44-inch mounting width means a 36-inch mattress and a 60-inch one means 52. If your sofa’s paperwork prints the mounting width, that is a second check on the tape measure (our suggestion). The Sofa Bed Mattress lists widths from 35 to 64 inches at 72 long. If your old mattress is longer than 72 inches, such as the 80 inches in that chart’s queen row, the Sofa Bed Mattress is the one of the five whose page offers custom widths and lengths (our reading); the Hospitality Bed page says other sizes mean contacting the seller.

Measure with the bed open and the old mattress still on the frame: width, length and thickness, edge to edge, and write all three down (our suggestion). If yours is a click-clack or futon, a furniture retailer’s sleeper-sofa guide says those sleepers don’t have separate, hidden mattresses: their cushions serve as both seat and bed. A chair bed is a different job, see our pull-out chair bed guide.

How thick can it be and still fold closed?

The mattress has to fold with the mechanism inside the sofa, so thicker is not better. On one maker’s FAQ, most sofa bed mechanisms are designed for a mattress around 4 to 5 inches thick, and a thicker one may keep the sofa from closing properly or put extra strain on the mechanism. For pull-outs, 4 to 5 inches is typical in a furniture retailer’s sleeper-sofa guide. On the four Leggett & Platt pages read at Wallace Flynn Collective, the two 5-inch ones (ComforCOOL II and Memory Flex) are recommended for the Max Plus 2500 Series mechanism and the two 6-inch ones (ComforCOOL and Plush 312) for the Classic Square 3500 Series heavy-duty mechanism, so the right thickness appears to follow the mechanism (our reading).

So treat your old mattress’s thickness as the starting point, and ask your sofa’s maker before going thicker (our suggestion). The sellers’ closing rules are worth following too: the Sofa Bed Mattress FAQ says to remove pillows, blankets and toppers before closing the sofa, and the Air Dream page asks you to measure your existing mattress and confirm it matches the deflated size listed.

Foam, innerspring or air: which type?

A furniture retailer’s sleeper-sofa guide sorts mattress types this way: memory foam conforms to the body and minimizes motion transfer, and higher-density foam is suggested for support and longevity; innerspring uses coils for bounce and airflow and suits sleepers who run warm; a hybrid of coils and foam is called a good choice for a guest bed. The same guide says a medium to medium-firm mattress suits the widest range of guests.

Where the five picks fall:

  • Foam: the Milliard (a 3-inch firm base foam under 1 to 1.5 inches of memory foam, listed as plush) and the Sofa Bed Mattress, which comes in contouring memory foam, described as a softer, more cradling feel, or responsive latex, described as a springier, firmer feel, at the same price.
  • Foam over coils: the Leggett & Platt ComforCOOL II, with a gel-infused foam top over VertiCoil innersprings, the coil-and-foam mix the guide calls a hybrid (our reading).
  • Innerspring: the Hospitality Bed, with tempered steel Bonnell coils and no padding layer described on its page.
  • Air over coils: the Air Dream, an air chamber on top of springs whose firmness you set with a pump.

If you cannot tell which suits your guests, coils with foam is the mix the sleeper-sofa guide calls a good choice for a guest bed. Size and thickness decide whether a mattress fits; type decides how it feels (our reading).

The five picks

Prices are for the queen. Sizes and thicknesses are the figures each seller prints. The ComforCOOL II, Hospitality Bed and Air Dream pages are Wallace Flynn Collective’s product pages, and those prices are that store’s.

Milliard 4.5 Inch Memory Foam Sofa Bed Replacement Mattress

$225 (queen)Price for reference only4.5 in thick · 58 x 72 in · memory foam · plush · CertiPUR-US certified foamView it on the brand's site →

Best for the lowest price of the five, with a thickness inside the 4 to 5 inch range. The page describes 3 inches of firm, high-density base foam under 1 inch of medium-soft memory foam in one place and 1.5 inches in another, perforated for airflow, with a removable, washable cover, and lists it as compatible with standard folding couch bed frames. It arrives compressed and the page says it can take up to 48 hours to expand fully. It costs $389 less than the next pick (our arithmetic).

Drawbacks: The queen is 58 inches wide, two inches narrower than the 60-inch queens on the other four picks’ pages, so check your frame width. It lists one plush comfort level and a comfort layer of 1 to 1.5 inches of memory foam (the page gives both) over 3 inches of base foam.

Sofa Bed Mattress (The Lilian)

$614 (queen)Price for reference only60 x 72 in · contouring memory foam or responsive latex · medium or firm · organic cotton removable coverView it on the brand's site →

Best for an exact size and a choice of feel. The size list runs from 35 x 72 to 64 x 72 inches, with custom sizes offered, and the memory foam and latex versions cost the same. The page says most stock sofa bed mattresses are thin because they need to fold, tags this one “Less bar. More bed.”, and says it is made to fold inside the mechanism and needs no flipping.

Drawbacks: The product page lists no thickness, so confirm it against your old mattress before you order. At $614 it is $389 more than the Milliard (our arithmetic). The page describes the memory foam and latex options by feel only.

Leggett & Platt ComforCOOL II 5-inch Sleeper Mattress

$700 (queen, 60 in)Price for reference only5 in thick · 60 x 72 in · gel-infused foam over VertiCoil innersprings · made in the U.S.A.View it on the brand's site →

Best for frequent guests, if your mechanism is the series the page names. It is foam over coils, which we read as the hybrid the sleeper-sofa guide suggests for a frequent host, saying a pull-out with a hybrid mattress will suit all sleepers and stand up to frequent use. The page lists widths from 24 to 60 inches and prints the subtract-8 rule for matching the mounting width, which helps if you know yours.

Drawbacks: The page recommends it for the Max Plus 2500 Series mechanism, so it may not suit a different mechanism, and it prints no firmness rating. It is Wallace Flynn Collective’s listing rather than a brand page, and $700 is $475 more than the Milliard (our arithmetic).

Hospitality Bed 5-inch Innerspring Sleeper Mattress

$680 (queen)Price for reference onlyabout 5 in thick · 60 x 72 in · tempered Bonnell steel coilsView it on the brand's site →

Best for a classic coil feel. The page describes a commercial-grade 5-inch innerspring with tempered steel coils, 72 inches long, and sets it against all-foam replacements. The sleeper-sofa guide says innerspring uses coils for bounce and airflow and calls it great for sleepers who run warm and prefer a classic mattress feel.

Drawbacks: Its dimensions are listed as approximate and the page says the color may vary. It ships by truck, and other sizes mean contacting the seller. The page describes coils and thickness, not a foam or fiber layer, and it is Wallace Flynn Collective’s page, not a brand’s.

Air Dream Replacement Sleeper Sofa Mattress

$800 (queen)Price for reference only60 x 72 x 5 in deflated, 11 in inflated · air chamber over coils · 50 lbView it on the brand's site →

Best for occasional guests who want to set the firmness. The page describes air-over-coil construction that inflates in 45 seconds with a handheld pump and adjusts from firm to soft, and says it has twice the thickness of a standard sleeper mattress. Deflated it is 5 inches, the figure the coil picks print, and the page says to match your old mattress to that deflated size.

Drawbacks: The most expensive of the five, and the pump is sold separately. The page says some sleeper sofas will not accept it, and a sofa it does not fit may damage the mattress; it asks you to match your existing mattress to the deflated size, and does not recommend it as an everyday mattress, only for occasional guest use.

A topper instead?

The one topper priced here is Milliard’s 3-inch memory foam topper: $99 in queen (Price for reference only), 80 x 60 x 3 inches, soft, with a five-zone design, and the page says allow 24 to 72 hours to expand. It is a general topper: the page lists compatibility as most standard beds and does not mention sleeper sofas.

It is enough when your mattress is still the right size and thickness and the complaint is hardness, not a worn-out mattress (our reading), at $126 less than the Milliard replacement (our arithmetic). A topper adds cushion on top but does not replace a mattress that has lost its support; if the bar still comes through with it on, replace the mattress (our reading). It also cannot stay on when the sofa closes: one maker’s FAQ says to remove toppers before closing, and 3 inches on a 4 to 5 inch mattress is a 7 to 8 inch stack (our arithmetic). It is 80 inches long, so it overhangs a 72-inch sleeper mattress by 8 inches (our arithmetic). Store it between guests (our suggestion).

Which one for your sofa

  • Tightest budget, and your old mattress measures about 4.5 inches thick: the Milliard.
  • You want the feel chosen and the size exact: the Sofa Bed Mattress, once you have confirmed its thickness.
  • Frequent guests, and a Max Plus 2500 Series mechanism: the ComforCOOL II (our reading).
  • Classic coil feel: the Hospitality Bed.
  • Occasional guests, firmness set by pump: the Air Dream, after checking it fits.
  • Frame is worn out as well: a whole-sofa replacement may make more sense; see best sleeper sofa.

Before you order

  • Measure again with the sofa open. Width, length and thickness of the old mattress and the space it sits in (our suggestion).
  • Read the return terms on each product page linked above before you order.
  • Keep the old mattress until the new one folds closed with the cushions back on (our suggestion).
  • Remove pillows, blankets and toppers before closing, as the Sofa Bed Mattress FAQ says.

Where these numbers come from

Sizes, thicknesses, constructions and prices come from the product pages and guides linked above, read on 2 November 2026; prices are the queen prices shown without a code. The differences between prices, the 8-inch comparisons and the situation picks are our own.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a sleeper sofa mattress?

Not the size of the bed it is named after. A queen sleeper mattress is 72 inches long on each of the five replacements priced here (the Hospitality Bed’s dimensions are listed as approximate), 60 inches wide on four of them and 58 on the Milliard, against the approximate 60 x 80 inches a furniture retailer’s sofa size chart gives for an open queen sleeper (the pages’ own figures). The Leggett & Platt pages at Wallace Flynn Collective print twin 36 x 72, full 52 x 72 and queen 60 x 72 and say those sizes allow the mattress to fold correctly within the mechanism. Measure the mattress you have, edge to edge, before ordering.

How thick can a sleeper sofa mattress be?

On one maker’s FAQ, most sofa bed mechanisms are designed for a mattress around 4 to 5 inches thick and a thicker one may keep the sofa from closing properly, and 4 to 5 inches is typical for a pull-out in a furniture retailer’s sleeper-sofa guide. On the four Leggett & Platt pages read at Wallace Flynn Collective, the two 5-inch mattresses are recommended for one mechanism series and the two 6-inch ones for another, so the right thickness appears to follow the mechanism (our reading). Check your own sofa maker’s figure before going thicker (our suggestion).

Is memory foam or innerspring better for a sleeper sofa?

Neither wins on every count. A furniture retailer’s sleeper-sofa guide says memory foam conforms to the body, innerspring uses coils for bounce and airflow, and a hybrid of coils and foam is a good choice for a guest bed; it also says a medium to medium-firm mattress suits the widest range of guests. Of the five picks here, the Milliard and the Sofa Bed Mattress are foam, the Hospitality Bed is innerspring, the Leggett & Platt ComforCOOL II is foam over coils and the Air Dream is an air chamber over coils.

Is a mattress topper enough for a sleeper sofa?

Only if it can come off each time the sofa closes (our reading). One maker’s FAQ says to remove pillows, blankets and mattress toppers before closing the sofa, and the 3-inch topper priced here is 80 inches long against 72 for the sleeper queens, with a page that does not mention sleeper sofas (our reading). It can add cushion on guest nights while the old mattress stays; it does not replace a worn-out one (our suggestion).
